I just finished setting up my first aquarium. Fishies coming in a week or so. Yay... I've found a new (or rather, simply "A") hobby.

That thing blows. The one on Duece Bigalow Mail jigalo (Sp?) kicks that things ass.

Looks good, Warik! Looks like you bought one of the backgrounds for it too. Better than the wall behind it, IMHO.

What about that hose in the middle? Maybe obscure it with a plant?

LOOKS GREAT !!!

Aquariums are relaxing.... When I get settled in a house I'm going to have a giant saltwater aquarium..

starfish:D :D :D :D

Some snails would be nice to take care of algae in the future. Plus, when they reproduce, you can crunch em against the glass for food. Otherwise, they become too numerous.

WARIK you are a pleasant enigma.

nice tank....personally the sea weed prop on the left had side of the pic is a little too much, you could probablycould do without it.

it might detract from the fish, and the overall presentation.

I know it is in for symetrical puposes, to off set the rock formation on the right, but in this case some a-symetry might benifit you

TheProject,

The hose is the airhose that leads to the castle. The castle has bubbles that come out of the tower (though you can't see them in the pic because my air pump was defective.. got a new one today though so I'll have more pics in the future). I didn't have enough tubing so I had to do it like that. Bought some more tubing today. Going to run it down the wall of the tank next to the left plant & UGF tube and then run it under the gravel to the castle. Poof... no more tube.

KEL,

29 gallons... freshwater. I'm a newbie so I don't want to fool with saltwater or live plants. =)

Boach,

Gonna get myself a common pleco aka "sucker fish" in about a month or two when the algae develops.

OMEGA,

Enigma, eh? =)

It is tall but it is not thick/wide. I like it because it somewhat covers up the plastic tube on the side that leads to the undergravel filter. Also, it's directly in front of the hanging power filter, so the plant sort of waves around due to the current up there.

Can't wait to get my fishies. Going to get some Rosey barbs to start, then some X-Ray tetras and buenos aires barbs. Dunno what to get after that, but in the end I will have about 18-20 little guys and a huge pleco eating up all the mess they make.

I am disappointed that you don't have one of those funky deep-sea diver figurines....

...apparently, beyond being eye-candy, they serve the practical purpose of providing aeration (if properly fitted with an air pipe...)

Everyone say "air pipe" out loud right now....it's fun!!

The only reason I don't have one is because PetSmart didn't have them in stock. =) Going hunting for one tomorrow while I exchange my heater. Going to get one of those submersible heaters with the pre-set temperature gauge instead of this crappy "turn the knob till you eventually find what you need" POS. That's what I get for trying to save $5.

It sounds like you know what you're doing...

Aquariums give me bad memories...I bought one as a Christmas present for my ex....and I really went all out ---> bought a very nice cherrywood stand, expensive Fluval filter, etc., - I spent hours setting it up and teaching her own to maintain it and clean it, etc., --- and wouldn't you know it , a week after we broke up she sold the damn thing.

But yours will probably bring you YEARS of enjoyment and positive experiences!!

I actually don't know shit past the information I was given. I've been harassing this very helpful dude over e-mail like twice a day for a week or so getting as much info as I can. I'm probably the most educated newbie there is thanks to this guy.

My mom was sitting there in awe watching me set up all the shit... saying it was all confusing with assembling the filter and cleaning the gravel yada yada yada. One of the funnest experiences of my life. Got a real sense of accomplishment.

Can't wait till I get my fish. Going to get my first three in a week and the tank should be fully stocked by April.

oh, lol, you DO have a background!all black background looks nicer IMO

I have a background. You can't see it that well because a) the tank is dirty as hell due to new tank syndrome... gravel dust all over the place even though I washed it for like 3 hrs before putting it in... should be clear in a week. Also because b) I didn't use the flash to avoid reflection of the light. :)

Black backgrounds do look nice... maybe I'll change it some day if I tire of the current one.

Nice tank warick. PM Thick Dog he is into tanks big time. I'm setting up an new fresh water tank next weekend because my kids loved looking at the fish at my inlaws house. It'll be a small one in there room.

It has been proven that looking at aqua modules (and the fish) reduces blood pressure. That's why you see a lot of them in doctors waiting rooms etc. So, it would be the anti-side for parabolan.

That a nice loooking tank, i used to work at a pet store, I would more than happy to give advice or anwser questions.

nice tank warik...it seems all my friends are getting into them...we were at this baller's house this other day who had a 300 gallon saltwater...it had some crazy coral in it...he said it was so tricky to maintain it all..the coral needs a current running through it to stimulate it...so there was this oscillating jet pushing water all around..he had it built into a wall so that you could see both sides...you went into this closet door to work on it...i was impressed...good luck...i like ropefish...

Here is my 200 gallon reef:

http://cards.webshots.com/cp-14086061-Nsfw-album/27026354IobVvINZeq

I have 880watts of VHO, 1200watts of Metal Halide (Iwasaki 6500K), Berlin ProXL skimmer, Magdrive pumps, Zoomed powerheads.

I have a 180 lbs of live rock and set it up a fish only at first.

After Christmas, I came home to find everything dead since the person who was taking care of it neglected it.

I have since stacked it with corals, but I will post those pics later on.

Get some real plants, they will provide your fish with oxygen and get rid of carbondioxide buildup. If you have sand at the bottom you just stick em in there.

I think freshwater tanks are great..

We have one too..
Did you know they have small frogs that
you can get to go into an aquarium.

I love frogs!! :)

Enjoy your tank..

Hey I just added another 14 fish to my 60 gallon tank for community fish that I set up a month ago. First fish I have added since the second week I had it. Got a Bala Shark, 7 guppies, 2 scissor tails, 2 Blue Dwarf Gourami's, a pleco, and a clown loach. What fish are you going to cycle with? I used Marble Mollies, Red eye tetras, Red swordtails.

The 55 gallon has been sitting for 3 weeks without fish or anything other than undergravel filter and two powerheads. It is going to be my cichlid tank.

Warik you have a lot of stuff in there right now. Hide those air hoses and tubes.

Huge plecos are lazy fucks. Better off with a couple little fellows and watch them grow to the appropriate size.

That's what I'm going to do. I'm going to get 1 small common pleco and let him grow into my algae monster. They sell the large ones at the pet shop for like $15... crazy. I'd rather just grow my own.

Warik, make sure you properly cycle the tank with a few "starter fish". You must go through the complete nitrogen cycle before your take will be safe to house your fish.

What I'm doing is letting the tank sit in normal operation for a week before getting my fish. Got the pump, heater, and filter running, and I'm feeding the empty tank twice a day as I would normally feed the fish. Supposedly that will somewhat simulate the cycle and make it safe for the first few fish. I'm also told that getting only 3-4 fish as starters instead of stocking it to full in one shot will allow the nitrite cycle to take place without making it lethal for the inhabitants of the tank.

Jimsbbc, very nice reef, you may wish to move up the Kelvin temp range with your MH bulbs - depending on the variety of corals. I've seen some nice results with 10K and above. The 6.5ks are a bit to yellow in spectrum for my tastes which can promote hair algae growth (and the like). The zooxanthellae algae really respond well to the blue wave length which is more prevalent in the higher temp bulbs.

Crum, most excellent work. Have you happened to review the “under water plenum” filtration setup? And I’m impressed that you have not used a skimmer…. One of my on-going debates with a few other folks. (I’m not for them in a STRICTLY reef tank) Of course the problem is folks ALWAYS want to add in way to many fish….

Ok, that’s enough on that. If you need a FEW questions answered just e-mail me as I don’t want to take up to much board space.

Tha last thing you want to do is Add Tropical Fish to establish tha tank. You need FUCKING patients. Get 6 or 7, 5cent Goldfish. Throw the lil fuckers in there. Let it chill for 1-2 months. Add "Cycle" and a few cups of gravel from an established system (beneficial bacteria to kick start the nitrogen cycle).

After ammonia, nitrites go down, go ahead and take out the gold fish, and add 1 or 2 nice fish. A few weeks later, add another couple of fish...a month later...add a couple more.

Thats it. Taking it slow is the key.

As far as 55k, 65k, or 10k metal Halides go, Basically Kelvin temp. isn't going to encourage undiserable algea growth. Poor water quality (high nitrates/phosphates) will do this. Also 65k lighting has much more PAR than 10k or 12k lights, which means more INTENSITY, which = More coral growth. 65k's will run WHITE if you have a proper ballast (PFO), but supplemental Actinics would still be required to get a more "blueish" look. With 10k You won't need that.

Second, the Blue spectrum, although very appealing to the eye, does very LITTLE for coral growth.

Warik, I don't use a Plenum. DSB or deep sand beds produce the same effect but are much Safer, since there isn't much of a risk to re-realease or leach nutrients into the water, thus degrading the water quality. 3-5 inch deep sand bed should be sufficent.

But I don't even use a DSB, I use the live rock as my main source of filtration, more of a Berlin method (without the skimmer though). My sand bed is only 1 1/2.

You're 100% on point about the people wanting to add too many fish too freakin fast. Taking it slow is the Key. It will seperate success from failure.

Also as far as reef tanks go...to more Corals, the better, Since corals unlike Fish, DO not produce any nutrients, but instead Export nutrients (much like plants/algea). So the more live coral/live rock/live sand...the better.

Peace.

Darktooth, I wanted to set-uP a piranha tank, but realized that they were actually pretty boring fish..

A neat story...

A friend of mine had a piranha tank,,,about 12 piranha's in there...one day he throw in about 5 or 6 feeder goldfish...their normal food...well the piranha's ate EVERY one EXCEPT this lil goldfish..... For some reason they never ate him...well after then..everytime my buddy would throw in gold fish to feed them...they would eat everyone..EXCEPT that same one that they first singled out...THEY NEVER ATE HIM! Tha goldfish just grew and grew and lived with tha Piranha.

Since then my friend has torn down his tank, but in all my years of fish keeping I've never seen something like that...Ever.

go w/ African Cichlids... They have the bright colors of saltwater fish... but are fairly low mantenance. They are very active and tend to come to the front of the tank when people are around.

My cichlid tank

I just set up a 55 gallon south american ciched tank after having numerous tanks in the past. I wanted to get some fish that have personalitles.....and these definately do. I have Jack dempsey's, a few convicts, and a few firemouth. They are annoying at times - - - they move around gravel to their liking, move big rocks (like the size of tennis balls), and you can think again about live plants........ I also just purchased a gold nugget pleco thats about 5 inches long. He's a sweet fish...

So in the next 6 months I am going to move these guys into a 85 gallon tank and then in my 55 I am going to set it up as a African tank (Lake Malawai) . . .. . those fish a so beautiful and as far as cost/easy of care.....i don't think you can beat it.

My pleco is larger than this one in the picture but same colorings..

ahh....this brings back memories. Perhaps i'll get back into it someday.

My last two fish were Oscars that had grown so big that it was just the two of them in a 55 gal tank. My father had some piece of crap plastic top on the tank. We went on vacation and the fish knocked the top off the tank. One jumped out of the tank onto the floor. The other jumped directly into the garbage pail near the tank.

True story.

First time I cleaned mine I had one of my Red Swortails jump out the back and slide across the top and onto the towel I was standing on.......fortunately I grabbed him and threw his ass back in there.

I heard Oscars tear the shit out of everything.
