my computer is slow & keeps crashing

Fuck this. I know i wont get any replies to this thread but what the fuck. I have to send about 30 error messages to microsoft a week due to crashes & freezes. My computer runs at a crawl, it sometimes takes 2 minutes for a page to load and windows shut down by themselves all the time when i try to do something in them (i.e., if i click something, instead of opening that the whole window will just shut down) Has anyone heard of MemTurbo? is this software any good for computer problems? what other software is there?

Right now i have 256MB DDR RAM. i am going to replace it with 768MB SDRAM.

My hard drive is a 20GB, and it only has 1GB of free space on it. IS that important. Should i get a 40GB? They are cheap now (about $30 if you shop around).

I am running windows XP on a 1200Mhz athlon.

Vic 20's suck.
Upgrade to a Commodore 64.

Dump all of that porn you have stashed on your hard drive. It should be lightning fast then! :)

You god damn philistine. Women licking their titties while covered in peanut butter is art. It expresses how i feel about my life.

Seriously though, is it just slow while surfing the internet or is the performance slow when opening an actual application? Defragged lately? What is your cpu and mem percentages usually at in task manager?

hmmm. so you're suggesting i backup & reinstall everything? how long would that take.

Since i am thinking of getting a 40GB hard drive, could i format & install onto that drive?

both. Haven't defragged in a month or so.

CPU is usually about 8%, when i do something it goes up to 90%, then back down to 8%. I don't know what my memory percentage is as there are 3 types of memory & don't list the amount currently used. My physical memory (i assume this is RAM) says 261MB total, but only 35MB available. Don't know if that is normal or not.

You might as well if you're thinking about getting a new hard drive. I usually format my drive twice a year just to "clean" out everything. It usually makes a noticable difference in performance.

Oh I forgot to add that a format and reinstall can take a while depending on how much data you have to back up then copy back onto the new drive. I'd set a day aside to do it just to compensate for any problems that may happen.
