My APT has one cable jack, How can I split the line for cable modem/tvs?

2 bedroom apt, neither room has a cable jack, so basically I have a 40 foot cord running from one splitter behind the TV in the living room to my room where the modem is.

I want to split it again, here in my room so that I can hook up two TVs.

Is there a special spliter for this? I showed the cable guy a splitter I have and he said it wouldn't work because of the range or something.

Also, would that totally slow down my internet or what?

the cable company should be able to provide you with a splitter. There are also signal amplifiers that they can use too so that you don't get any signal loss.

If you split it once, its usually no big deal, but 4 times can be a problem. It all depends on the signal strength coming into your unit. Your cable guy can measure all of this.

Splitting for regular TV is easy. Splitting for HDTV is problematic, lots of loss. Splitting for cable modem can also reduce your internet speed, but its USUALLY not a problem.

Hmm I read that you can't use the amplifiers because it only amps the outgoing signal, and a cable modem recieves/sends and somehow that fucks it up and makes it worse.

I wanna just go buy something, not have the cable deush come over here again. But thanks.

So you want 3 outlets right?? If so, get a 3 way splitter and put the modem leg/cable from the 3 leg directly to the modem

You need a 5 mhz to 1 ghz splitter ....... should not effect your cable speed...

Look on the splitter you have - what is it now??

well, you can buy your own.. at a Radioshack.. but the cable company always disses them saying they aren't good enough.

you are right about amplifier, but it could be used on the cable line after the split.. not the cable modem side.

go get a splitter and run the cable

Can't find the damn thing now, but I'll take your advice and go buy one that is 5mhz to 1ghz. If it doesn't work I'm coming after you.

btw - open your internet browser, and in the URL type in 192.168.100.1

You need to be directly hooked to the modem, not a router......and it will bring up a window which will show the diagnostics of your cable modem which should show your downstream & upstream signal strength........I can tell you via this info if it will work or not....

Why yes, yes he is......

So you'll be good to go with a 3 way splitter as specified previously....
