Muay Thai Question

Okay, so I hear to condition the shins for muay thai one is supposed to strike the bottom of a heavy bag, correct? That being so, even though I'm not taking lessons at the moment, I want to in the future, so can I start training my shins now? How would I do this? 50 kicks each leg a day? 100? Less? More? Help? :p

um break glass and rub them into ur shins... Just kidding, either start hitting abag or get bamboo sticks and start rolling or hitting ur shins and forearms with them, or hit a tree, seriously!!!

I'm gonna not flame on this one. You can strike your shins with hard objects if you wish. But, the first time you hit a sweet spot that hurts, you're gonna stop- thus setting you back and keeping you from getting the conditioning you desire.

Instead, you need to learn how to strike it the Muay Thai way- rotating on your feet, hand positioning etc- all this makes a huge difference. If you don't plan on going to a thai gym for a while, buy a tape or find an instructional video on-line to watch. KO sport gym in Austin has a good vid online http://www.kosportgym.com
Just do a search for fightclips. Maybe someone else here has a site to go to. Goodluck bud!!!!!

If you are not going to start yet I would suggest you get your conditioning done early. You'll learn a lot faster if you don't have to stop every 5min to catch your breath. Your technique will be much better too, people get sloppy when they are tired.
Just wait for your instructior to begin teching you the ropes. If you really want to get your money's worth, make sure you practice the foot work at home too that way you'll get it alot faster and you'll be ready to move on to other things. You don't want to spend 1hr of your class correcting foot work, you want to be hitting pads and sparing, so do some work at home...

I would suggest not to condition your shins yet, because any bad habits you learn while kicking the bags aimlessly on your own will have to be unlearned. Better to start from scratch.

However, you can definately work on your cardiovascular conditioning and flexibility now. Trust me, you'll need it.
