Movie: Artificial Intelligence

I'm not so pompous as to say that I'm an intellectual.

I don't see why you'd have to be pompous to consider yourself intelligent... anyway...

A.I. fell off track when David began his sourjourn looking for the Blue Fairy.

That "falling off track" is exactly what showed how big of a success David was.

Did you learn something from the movie, Warik? Did the movie make you re-think a position on a certain subject?

I'll try to explain without spoiling anything.

I'm even more disgusted with humanity now than before. Remember the "Flesh Fairs?" That's the Holocaust all over again. So many years into the future and the fools still haven't learned a thing.

What about the pool incident or the scissors? Oh no the evil robot did it... God forbid we ask him why.

That among other things.

What was so intellectual about it?

The fact that the plot is so clear, yet so many people can't understand it. Those same people are those who actually believe that artificial intelligence is impossible and who can't seem to understand that a human being is just as "artificially intelligent" as "Mecha."

Damn that movie ruled... must pre-order the DVD when release date is announced.

Warik -

A) There's a difference between being "intelligent" and being "an intellectual." To call yourself an intellectual is indeed pompous.

B) When David began his journey, I lost all interest in the movie. (That is, until Gigolo Joe came on board.) That's what I meant by the movie "falling off track."

C) Regarding the scissors incident, Monica and Henry discussed it afterwards; they knew why he did it. They knew Martin had put him up to it. The issue was examined. To compare the "Flesh Fairs" with the holocaust is a little insulting to the 6,000,000 Jews who were systematically exterminated. In my humble opinion, your analogy is lacking.

Ok I guess I'm pompous then.

I guess that's the difference between you and me.

Not to the point to which it should have been.

I'm comparing the unjust extermination of millions of Jews to the unjust destruction of millions of artificially intelligent robots which, for the most part, could be considered "alive." I guess I should have expected as much, since everyone is offended by everything today.

If you can think of another example of lifeforms being unjustly terminated that wouldn't be considered "a little insulting," then I'd be glad to use it, but then wouldn't YOU be the one who would be "a little insulting" for thinking that one group's struggle is not as significant as another's? Wow... tough decision we have here.

Don't be such a wise ass Warik ... and the robots were not alive. To compare an inanimate object with a living, breathing person is ridiculous. Oh well, I guess that's what I should expect from you -- since you spend so much time reading your comics -- that is, you can't distinguish reality from fantasy.

I said they could be considered to be "alive." Not "they were alive," which brings me to another idea...

Define "life."

I've always thought that I could. Perhaps you could give an example of where I failed to do so?

-Warik

When you wrote that the robots could be considered to be "alive."

Define "life"? Hmmmm .... organic (carbon based) - not digital.

So if we discovered extraterrestrial life in a few centuries that just happened to not be carbon-based, it is not considered alive and it's therefore OK to destroy it and do whatever we wish with it?

The robots were actual THINKING beings. I know this is hard for someone to imagine unless he truly understands the concept of artificial intelligence and understands that "artificial intelligence" is not a couple million "if" statements telling the subject what to do in every event followed by an "else" telling the subject what to do in every other case. The only difference between you and David is the fact that he's a robot and you're organic. You both "think and feel."

Please don't respond with a lame retort like: "it's a movie! David isn't real!" If you'd like, we can wait until a being like David is created and then we can have this argument. Just make the request. =)

You are correct.

i just like how he played with his dead mom at the end (i swear i'm not ruining anything if you haven't seen it).

oh, and it's a good thing Paula Poundstone wasn't cast as the mom... poor little robots couldn't fight back.
