What else are you into when it comes to instrumental math rock/post rock?
Flah said:*crack knuckles*
Let's do this!
...Of Sinking Ships - ex. Hopesfall. Hard to find but some pretty and spacey moments.
1 Mile North - Near ambient guitar sections. Some of it's drone but worth looking into for the soundscapes they can create.
35007 - Known in the stoner circles and not really anywhere else. Shame, great jammy prog feel to them.
65 Days Of Static - Quality instrumental rock. Can get to be quite anthemic.
The Album Leaf - I know a lot of people that love these guys. Nice electronic influence.
The Advantage - Member of Hella is in this. If you're the age where 8-bit Nintendo played a significant role in your life, you need this.
Ativin - They have those movements that you can only find in math rock. You know what I'm talking about.
Battles - Quirky mathy stuff. Think Don Cab with electronics.
The Cancer Conspiracy - Really good spaced out instrumental rock with the focus being on the rock.
The Dead Texan - A little more involved than 1 Mile North but another soundscape band. Great mood pieces.
Do Make Say Think - Comparable to The Mercury Program, etc.
Explosions in the Sky - The "it" band in the genre right now. Beautiful delayed guitar lead to Slint like loudness.
Fly Pan Am - Don't call me on it but I'm pretty sure this is another GSYBE offshoot with shorter more focused songs.
Foxhole - Solid post rock with horns.
Ghosts And Vodka - Instrumental rock that's more straightfoward.
Grails - They can get a bit on the experimental side, but some of the best stuff out there right now. Can be both beautiful and painful.
Gregor Samsa - Some light vocal touches accent fantastic scapes.
Hella - The other "it" band. Off the wall stuff. One of the best drummers in music right now. Takes a few listens for it all to sink in.
Kayo Dot - Okay, so I cheated. They have vocals but you're in for a wild ride through some truly amazing music. Ex Mauldin of the Well.
Lightning Bolt - Loud and obnoxious with more than a handful of catchy riffs. They're just fun.
Maserati - Did a split with Mercury Program, don't know what happened after that. Wish I could find more.
The Mercury Program - If you remember stuff like Inlantic, this is where that sound went. My favorite active band right now in the genre. Just gorgeous arrangements.
Mono - Amazing post rock from Japan. The loudest and quietest band you'll ever hear.
Oxes - Math rock with an emphasis on rock.
Pelican - More on the metal side of things. They write some killer riffs though. Same kind of deal as 5ive, etc but less drone and more melody.
Red Sparowes - At one time featured members of Isis and Neurosis. Interesting use of slide guitar and their best work has a sort of shimmering beauty to it.
Rumah Sakit - Math rock without the flourishes. Great basslines.
Russian Circles - Gravitates more towards the traditional screamo look at loud/soft structures. Really good stuff.
Sequencepulse - Reminds me a bit of early Mogwai. They did a split with Gauge Means Nothing. No idea after that.
The Six Parts Seven - Kind of like The Mercury Program with a great focus on the guitars.
SubArachnoid Space - Stoner/psychedelic stuff. Has a good jam quality to it. Just like the name, it's spacey.
Supermachiner - Converge side project. All over the place musically but has some top notch moments.
Tides - Similar to Pelican with a greater focus on low end riffing.
Tristeza - Guitar rock with a real spaced out vibe to it.
Una Corda - More on the metal side of things but they have some great moments. Young band. I expect them to be huge.
Unwed Sailor - Reminds me of the jazzy attitude of old math rock stuff with a focus on melody.
Tell me how some of that stuff hits you and I can do recommendations from there.
Flah said:I don't really go to shows anymore and none of this stuff comes within driving distance. Sigh. Sucks.
How about I do a giant YSI of a song from each of these bands?
I was going to hunt down MP3s but this makes more sense.

No one who dances on sound and thought in this way can be evil; your heart must be dense and radiant. And that's cool. And we like cool, because we like the charade of pretending we're cool, and guys like you really improve the credibility of our act.

I like metal (slayer or mayhem would be prototype bands for my sound) first and foremost. I also love and play jazz, particularly bebop, bop and post-bop (miles davis, art blakey's jazz messengers and wes montgomery would be prototype bands for my preferred sound in that genre). Those are my two favorite genres.
I personally play saxophone, piano, drums and guitar. But guitar has been the mainstay for the past 23 years.
I did very much enjoy the "rave" movement of the early 90's, not so much on a music level as on a hedonistic level. My eldest son was born to Future Sounds of London, for example. My favorites were union jack, orb, orbital, aphex twin, autechre, omicron . . . . I also did a lot of sequencer stuff with rolands, moogs, drum machines etc, and of course, two technics turntables. That's when I would hear tortoise, etc, was in the ambient circles at the mid to end of that decade. I wouldn't call it math rock so much as progressive ambient from my point of view, just look how many times flah used words like "ambient" or "spacey" in his descriptions.
So, no, we don't like your music. We like that you talk about music like a true music lover, in terms of the chills going up and down your spine. In terms of saying your "heart feels like it's going to explode." That's some moving shit; I'm feelin' ya man.No one who dances on sound and thought in this way can be evil; your heart must be dense and radiant. And that's cool. And we like cool, because we like the charade of pretending we're cool, and guys like you really improve the credibility of our act.

As for Flah, he cannot be said to like or dislike anything. He sits like a recessed spider god at the center of a musical pantheon of his own construction. He knows all and sees all, and dispenses hidden drops of musical booty to further the apocalyptic state of the future wherein all the musical chosen are locked in suspended catoplexy of headphone cacoons. But don't worry about that yet, just enjoy the tunes.![]()
Nice to meet ya bro.
Hahaha, I need to have this printed up on buisness cards.majutsu said:As for Flah, he cannot be said to like or dislike anything.
