failure or no failure?

are you supposed to go to failure on your last set to stimulate muscle growth, or is that an urban myth.

also we are natural,

also, thanks

If you dont go to failure.....what is the basis for the muscle fibers to strengthen themselves??

I dont know, there are many times I have NOT gone to failure on the last set (maybe I dont havea spotter, etc) but damn look at me. I'm jacked.

i dunno...progressive overload?

so iv been wasting my time if i havnt been going to failure every workout?

IMO no you have not been wasting your time. start a poll to see how many people have actually gone to failure on their last set of every exercise of every workout.

see what results you get.

frankly, i dont think your poll options are comprehensive enough. bottom line = you suk at polls
tell me how to change it then instead of just being part of the problem be part of the solution

Yes, I go to failure on last rep every exercise.
I go to failure <50% of the time
I go to failire > 50% of the time
I never go to failure.

if you went to failure and expected growth everytime you went to failure we would all be huge and the world wouldnt need steroids

I think you missed the point a bit.

This should be a public poll. Id like to see TheShadow (love him dearly) rip into some peeps regarding muscle growth.

Darling - some ignorance is bulletproof

It depends on your definition of failure. I go till I can't get one more rep on the last 2 sets of each exercise.
When I had a spotter, we used to go till we couldn't do one more unassisted, then do 1 or two more, with spot.

There is only one definition of failure - that's not being able to complete a full ROM rep on your own.

Negatives, Partials, Forced reps are all considered beyond failure.

They call me mr knowitall, I will not comprimize...
Na, just kidding man, dont kill me.
I don't know if I would say "not being able to complete a full ROM rep on your own" real failure, sometimes just getting one more rep after that with the spotter just taking 3 oz. off the weight feels more like failure.

cool

this would probably serve well in the Training Forum, no?

Nah....b/c then I would have to move your movie review thread.....and Im lazy today

well after thousands of votes and much debate, it looks like the answer is to go to failure but less than 50% of the time

sublime, all the bs aside, I only go to failure on sets where I'm doing 6 or less reps...of course I'm bulking and am not natural...when cutting I often do burnouts with light weight...

I think myth. I've seen huge bodybuilders that don't go to failure and swear by it. Lot less risk of injury.

I suggest that you read this quote:

"Here’s another one that takes most bodybuilders a while to accept: you don’t have to train to failure to grow. This relates to overtraining as well. In a nutshell, the average guy can’t train to failure and beyond (forced reps, etc.) without overtaxing his system and halting his progress in the gym.

Some coaches would tell you not to train to failure at all. Coach King has a better idea. Based on his vast experience in the real world, Ian suggests you only train to failure or near failure about once every three weeks. Since most of Ian’s programs involve three week cycles within a larger twelve week plan, this make perfect sense.

Here’s how it works. Let’s say you’ve planned out your training for the next tree weeks. You’ll be using the same exercises and generally the same reps ranges, tempos and rest periods. On week one, you concentrate on perfect form and leave a few reps "in the hole" at the end of each set. If your goal is to get eight reps with a certain weight, use a weight that you can actually lift 10 or 11 times.

On week two you get a little closer to failure, but still fall a rep or two short. Finally, on week three, Ian allows you to go all out and train to failure. He’ll still tell you that forced reps (where you train beyond failure with the use of a partner) are counterproductive for most natural lifters and that such techniques are to be used only on a limited basis and within a periodized plan".

2 things: 1. I don't use a spotter, or partner. 2. I have connective tissue issues.
Due to my work demands, I can't afford to have any injuries, so I got to failure less than 50% of the time.

There are lots of theories out there.
that spanky theory right there is a bitch
what I don't understand is that I used to be pretty damn strong and I trained to failure, and I kept getting stronger and stronger for like 2-3 years so I don't get it. also I was not on gasoline, (it's important that we talk about gasoline in every post).

I do DC training, that means for the most part 1 set per bodypart (with rest pauses, static holds and stuff) so i always go to failure.

true but there are other factors outside of training to failure that determine the degree of muscle growth

Oh, and sure, we can debate whats failure.

Mentzer states that absolute failure is when you cannot do a negative rep, as well as a positive or static hold.

Therefore i ALWAYS finish my rep with a extra slow negative..ofcours,e without a spotter this means you kill yourself hehe.

iv come to the conclusion that on the last set of every excersise i will just keep going untill i cannot go any more.

once i cant complete, i will not attempt another one, but rather just have spotter put me back to safety, and be done.

yeah that's what I'm doing too. we're gonna be huge.
