This is the equipment I will be getting, from New York Barbell. I don't think I'm missing anything important, but feel free to suggest anything I may be leaving out, or that I can improve upon:

Power Rack w/ chinning bar and weight racks

Adjustable Bench, though I wonder if it's worth it to buy a good quality flat bench

im-0022tpbars.gif

Barbell

82626.gif

Glute-ham and reverse hyper machine

New York barbell products are pretty cheap, can anyone speak about their quality? Are there some things that I should splurge on for the build quality? Elitefts.com has some cool stuff but they're ridiculously pricy.

Are you getting one or two barbells?

Either way, I would spend the extra cash and get "it", or one of them at least 1000lbs rated. (I only have right now, and it's 1500lbs rated.)

My own personal preference would be not to buy the glute-ham thingy. You can save a boatload of money and still get a great workout by being a little creative. (Just a thought.)

Ohter than that, looks good.....

I'll have to see what kind of packages I can find. Free shipping would rule, I've seen a lot of 300 lb sets so I'd probably buy 1 of those and then buy 45 lb plates from then on. I won't need more than 600 lbs for awhile except for perhaps partial deads.

That's pretty much what I did, but the sets I saw for sale had more of cetain plates than I thought I would need. (35's, 25's, 2.5's and 5's...)

I bought, 2-25's, 4-10's, 2-5's, 2-2.5's, and than bought as many 45's as I thought I would need right then.
Now, I just buy 45's as I need them. (I got 14 now.)

Sounds like you have a good plan figured out.

Looks fantastic. I'm assuming the cage comes with short pegs to rack the weights up top for benches and squats even though they aren't shown, correct? If not, you will need them. I really like how the weights can be stored on the sides of the cage, wish mine did that.

How much weight are the safety bars rated for?

what's that gonna set you back bro? Any dumbbellls? Takes care of all the core lifts, deads, squats, bench, military..........no iso movements? Train for power or bodybuilding?

You have a great game plan. That is all you will ever need. Personally I would scrap the glute-ham raise, because it isn't a total necessity and spend the money 2 quality benches, one flat and one incline, instead of the adjustable (but if you are conserving space, only get an absolute top of the line, commercial adjustable, because otherwise they tend to be narrow and often times rock from side to side during a set). Possibly in the future I'd look into getting a dipping station, one where you can adjust the width of the bars. This again is if you're on a budget, I don't know your situation, but if you have the money to burn, you could just say fuck it and get the 2 benches, the dipping station, and the glute-ham raise. In any event, you're right on in terms of what matters when buying home equipment and what you mentioned is an excellent choice.

As far as quality, if I can see right, the brand of equipment is TDS, I worked out on TDS equipment in the past and found it to be of high quality. I am guessing you'll be doing this via mail order. I suggest that if at all possible(whether you have to drive a couple hours or whatever) you look at what you're buying in person. Feel it, make sure it is durable, make sure you personally like the stuff, and check out the bar and make sure it is gnarled and rough and not smooth and slippery.

i would definitely scrap the glute ham machine in place of a dip station, everything else looks awesome, wish i had the space and money to do the same thing

I've changed my mind a bit, and I think now I'm going to go for the EliteFTS combo power rack:

Yes, it's 200-300 more. But it comes WITH the bench, and check out the holes. Only 1 inch spacing apart in that middle area, and 2" in the other areas. That could very well come in handy, I hate doing rack bench presses with the pins not in the ideal spots.

And dumbell wise, the only thing I'll have them for are L-flyes (rotator cuff exercises) so I'll only need up to 15 lbs.

all you need is some rubber floor mats for oly lifts and deadlifts, a dipping belt, and bench than inclines or declines. Get some bands and go to home depot dfor chains and your all set

Yeah rubber mats is a good idea--I will pick up the dipping station at a later time (I did dips long enough, I want to focus on a big bench for awhile). I like the idea of training with bands and chains but I'm going to wait for awhile until my strength gains slow down before trying accomidating resistance methods.

Interesting how one's interests change over the course of their lifting. Not that I was ever a big fan of isolation movements before, but now just about the only exercise you'd see me do is a barbell curl, and I haven't even done that for months. All that's in my head is:

I want a big standing press! I want a big deadlift! etc. for all the big lifts. If I were to go into a gym in a couple years, I want everyone to be waiting for the chalk cloud to dissipate to see if I was still alive after my set.

:D :D :D

That should be a hallmark Card!!!! :fro:

Funny the way we change over the years, I always wanted to hit 315 on bench, now I don't even think it is heavy, I thought 500lbs dead was impossible now I can do it for reps, funny the way insanity works

Maybe if you're really nice to spatts she'll let you train with some of her stuff (e.g. glute-ham raise, bands, etc).

Spatts hates me.

Or at least she did, I haven't spoken with her in months...

i would personally want another bech with leg extension/curl
and can the glut thing

and some db's

my $0.02

What's a leg extension?

:D

Rubber mats is something I have to buy soon. They have large thick rubber kitchen mats at a local Sams club for $25 each, two or three of those would suit me nicely. Doing heavy deads on the wooden floor is starting to worry me...

A cheaper alternative to rubber mats is 1/2" plywood. I use 2 pieces of 1/2" plywood under my entire workout area.

Protects the floor, provides a nice surface to train on, and is cheaper than rubber matting.

Looks good. I'm in the same boat, looking to build a home gym. I've settled in on this Power Rack and probably this bench .

Now comes my dilema. I can get spinlock dumbells and like 250lbs of standard plates for under $300. That would give me 5-120lbs of dumbells but I lift alone and I rest the dumbell on my thighs and use my legs to get the heavy dumbells into position for shoulder press, incline and flat presses. I can't imagine doing this will spinlock dumbells as they would probably stap by leg.

I could forget the dumbells and get this lat pulldown / low row .

I agree with the Plywood idea. I was going to build a platform out of 2x6"s but setting the plywood on the floor is ok too. Maybe just a 3/4" sheet instead of two 1/2" sheets would work. Get the B/C grade plywood as one side is sanded smooth.

wow this really makes me wish i had my own home gym...just a hardcore fucking place with some nine inch nails blasting, jsut chalk and iron
