Marriage as a contract

I was listening to Howard Stern this morning, and for those of you familiar with him, he is completely against marriage b/c of what it did to him financially (yes, I am sure he is rich, but that's not the point). I kind of share a theory with him about marriage and its existence as a very binding contract. Where else or in what other situation would you sign a contract that pretty much garauntees your partner 50% of everything you have made and will make if your relationship doesn't work out? They were talking about how Harrison Ford had to pay his wife $90 million when they got divorced (no kids). Is this not a HUGE injustice? He has to pay her part of what he makes for future work!! That seems insane to me. Just something to think about. I don't know that much about marriage law, so feel free to correct me if I am way off base here.

Howard Stern is a piece of shit, his wife should have taken him for more. She deserves every penny.

Marriage is a social contract. So what? I file this under "Duh"!

maybe you couldn't understand, or I used words too big for you. my point is that it is seems to be a very severe contract in terms of penalties if two human beings decide to break up. The husband has to give the wife half of all his earnings?! What did she do to deserve this? (in the example I used there were no kids involved).

And it's a legal contract, I believe.

It shouldn't be so 50/50. Like I state everywhere it should be subjective to each situation.

If man promised to care for woman and family and woman left career then yes, the man should continue to provide. PROVIDING she didn't screw the marriage up (cheating, gambling, gargling horse semen on the net...)

But if they enter into a marriage with both people working, and he makes a whack load and eventually the marriage breaks apart for whatever non-offensive reasoning, why should she get 50% of his take?

Notice how the man always has the money in my examples. aaah, I'm a pig.

Thats not always the case plenty of times you see no fault divorces where couples split up an go there merry or not so merry ways after the marital assets are divided. Most celebs though do get hammered.

Oh well. I doubt you'll ever be so weathly as to worry about it. Your wife will probably have to pay you alimony by that time.
