Marines say ‘Saddam is done’

1833071.jpg

“We wanted to send a message that Saddam is done,” said Gurfein, a New York native in the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.
“People are scared to show a lot of emotion. That’s why we wanted to show them this time we’re here, and Saddam is done,” he said.
Marines next to him attached metal ropes on the front of their Jeeps to one metal portrait of Saddam, backing up to peel the Iraqi leader’s black and white image off the metal frame.
The Marines arrived in Safwan, just across the Kuwait border, after Cobra attack helicopters, attack jets, tanks, 155 mm howitzers and sharpshooters cleared the way along Route 80, the main road into Iraq.
Safwan, 375 miles south of Baghdad, is a poor, dirty, wrecked town pocked by shrapnel from the last Gulf War. Reminders of the first war abound, among them a leftover missile that detonated inside a soccer field a year ago, killing eight children.
Iraqi forces in the area sporadically fired mortars and guns for hours Thursday and Friday. Most townspeople hid, although residents brought forth a wounded little girl, her palm bleeding after the new fighting. Another man said his wife was shot in the leg by the Americans.
A few men and boys ventured out, putting makeshift white flags on their pickup trucks or waving white T-shirts out truck windows.
“Americans very good,” Ali Khemy said. “Iraq wants to be free.”
Some chanted, “Ameriki! Ameriki!”
Many others in the starving town just patted their stomachs and raised their hands, begging for food.
A man identifying himself only as Abdullah welcomed the arrival of the U.S. troops: “Saddam Hussein is no good. Saddam Hussein a butcher.”
An old woman shrouded in black — one of the few women outside — knelt toward the feet of Americans, embracing an American woman. A younger man with her pulled her away, giving her a warning sign by sliding his finger across his throat.
In 1991, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis died after prematurely celebrating what they believed was their liberation from Saddam after the Gulf War. Some even pulled down a few pictures of Saddam then — only to be killed by Iraqi forces.
Gurfein playfully traded pats with a disabled man and turned down a dinner invitation from townspeople.
“Friend, friend,” he told them in Arabic learned in the first Gulf War.
“We stopped in Kuwait that time,” he said. “We were all ready to come up there then, and we never did.”
The townspeople seemed grateful this time.
“No Saddam Hussein!” one young man in a headscarf told Gurfein. “Bush!”

Well it seems that we have the support of the people.

Yeah, that's what I find really amusing about this whole thing.

A bunch of pussy western countries are against us ousting Saddam, a bunch of Arab countries are against us ousting Saddam, and countless jackass protesters here in the states are against it as well.

...but the actual citizens of Iraq are all for it.

It's fair to say that the US have the support of most citizens, but there are those who are not as accepting of US occupation.

If your country was in the process of being taken over by another country and there was no hope of stopping them who would you show support for??

Just playing devil's advocate :)

I think it goes way beyond that. I think they truly want us to liberate them from the prick Hussein.

Damn, I want to be over there bad. Why is it that my command is dragging their feet.

I think the people with the M-16's and MRE's would win my heart.

Watch out now- I'm getting my deep thinking going on here.

One town means little.

We'll see if we have the support of the people once the war is over and the occupation begins.

thats what the PsyOPs are for. The war isn't against Iraq or the Iraqis, it is against the non representative, militant, anti UN government that runs Iraq.

Of course those are southern towns that are cheering. The South & North hate Saddam's regime because their ethnic groups are repressed violently. I have no idea how Baghdad will react to removal of Hussein.

your country is the 2nd largest allied military power in the Gulf, so you're as responsible as we are. Viva democracy.

You know before this kicked off I thought the whole place was going to get destroyed.........however, I am proud of the way Bush / Blair etc have handled the conflict. It is good to see them exercising their brains before the brawn.

what do you think will happen to blair once this war is over?

and what kind of paper is The Sun? they fucking tore into chirac.

I think that the majority of the british public will continue to support Blair. If Iraq had been carpet bombed then I think he would be replaced. However, I think the restrained and humanitarian way in which the war has been waged so far will boost support for him........it looks like he has taken the fears of the public on board and acted accordingly.

The Sun is nothing more than a rag........I wouldn't wipe my ass with it. The only good thing about it is the semi-naked women on Page 3 ;) They pander tot he public in order to increase sales......they will do anything to achieve greater sales!!

First, we are not occupying. Occupying infers we are not going to leave. We are. All you have to do is look at Japan and West Germany. We along with others helped rebuild their countries and then left. That is not occupation.

Now what the Russians did with East Germany is called occupation.

Did we occupy France? Nope, we liberated them from the Germans since they couldn't. And we did not once, but twice inside of 30 years! Did we occupy or liberate the country's of Europe in WWI and WWII? We liberated them all so they could pretty much dis us later on like now.

To fill up (time or space): a lecture that occupied three hours.
To dwell or reside in.
To hold or fill (an office or position).
To seize possession of and maintain control over by or as if by conquest.

Semantics...regardless, from all I've read, we will be stationed there for years, and will most likely be erecting bases and a military presence will be maintained. (Pax Americana) This is when we will see the results. Hopefully they will go well for us and for the Iraqis.

thats right, there are no american troops in japan.....oh wait, yes there are.......but its ok, cause everyone there wants them to stay there......oh wait, not anymore, cause they are raping little girls
