madcow 5x5 workout question

I'm currently planning on starting the madcow intermidiate workout. And under the workout it says assistance. What does that mean? Does that mean that I do that exercise everytime I workout or something else? Thanks
 
they are "smaller" movements designed to assist the "big" lifts which may or may not be lagging
ie: tricep extensions to help the bench press, pull-ups to help rows, etc
 
i understand what they are for. but do i do them every time i work out or only if im having trouble with a set?
 
If the assistance hinders the progress of the major lifts don't do them. They are only in there because most people that are used to a BB type split feel they need to do curls etc. So he allows you to do them for 2 sets on friday.

The rows are Pendlay rows, from the Floor 90deg to the ground.
