when are "they" going to start naming north american hurricane occurances with cultural names?
can I have a hurricane ackmahd?
understandbly probably not a good idea given the current political environment
what about hurricane heinz?
still too soon after WWII in europe?
hurricane kaneisha?
not touching that concept
hurricane theresa?
oh God?

I apologize for most likely fucking up the "ackmahd" spelling
ya know

not to mention hurricane Pat
or Terry
but Theresa will never happen

I think the list is actually rotated and names come back up every five years, except storms like Andrew, whose names are retired.

LOL!! Kaneisha wil definitely piss off the white people (Oh, I would love to see the threads on that) and the middle class & upper class black folk. So, I don't see that happening.

"who" makes the pool list?
many names I encounter are never on the "list"

so in your opinion only lower class blacks would be pissed off?
is there any category they aren't pissed off at?

What names are you looking for?

The naming of hurricances goes back awhile. DG posted a link for the names used within the past 5 years.

I believe my name was a hurricane, but because it such a 1950 name, I assume it was done many years ago.

I think "they" should go with Hebrew names for a stretch
try Hebrew names for a year and see how that goes over
well fuck hurricane joshua really creamed jacksonville
wiped out Matt's two mansions

I responded to a question similar to this a feew weeks back
yeah I read that too
doesn't explain why there is virtually no cultural diversity in the naming system
hurricane jerome ain't going to happen
seems the name attachment system is unfairly if not outright weighted against traditional anglo-saxon names

I think you misread my post. It wouldn't surprise me if some middle-class and upper-class black people would be pissed at having a hurricane named Kaneisha.

I swear the longer I'm on this board the more I'm beginning to understand why I always get "you don't look like a Brenda." :lmao:

darling you quite well said "white people" and middle and upper class blacks would be offended
which leaves at least as far as black/white is concerned "lower class blacks"

yeah I did get it "backwords" didn't I?

when you have a hurricane Michael come rippin through the countryside it's cool

btw "michael" is easily the most universally and/or culturally prominent male name

well you'll get Micheal next year and Teresa(diff. spelling) in 09. Here's the list from the NHC.

quick glanze through the list I can see an effort to incorporate "hispanic" names
not many "new" african-american names
what gives?
shit most african-americans have been"in country"generations before the euro-asian influx of the first half of the last century(i.e. 1900-1950)

btw there is a signaficant difference betw
"Teresa"
and "Theresa"

If I may channel Matttheskywalker for a moment ... perhaps the general public are too poor, uneducated and ignorant to understand such names. In fact, it's amazing they used Ophelia at all, hell they should have changed the spelling to O F E E L Y A so those dumb common folk could read it.

thereoretically an entirely balanced nomenclature system could be developed
which would use all the names of the newborns as the database
make it weighted or whatever so that the most recent names have more prominence
but that system, even if perfectally developed and adminstered
might still yeild a hurricane "Jesus"
and well fuck...
