low testosterone levels

hi guys i have a quick question hopefully u guys can help me. last month i had a testosterone (free) mine was at 177 and the range was from 400-1100.
i was then put on testim for a month then had to take another test to see were my testosterone was at only this time when i looked at the test which was for (free) testosterone and it was measured in percentages mine was at 4.98% and the reference range is between 1.68%-7.58%. my question is how does this translate to the first test so i need a number from 400-1100. is this the same testor just another way of measuring it and if so what does the 4.98% translate into as far as my first test which was 177 and range is 400-1100 plz help thankyou j

your first number is serum testosterone which is very low. Free or bioavailable testosterone is the most important. your free level is in the normal range. make sure your serum levels are above 400. If not, your doc might have to increase your dosage of testim.

thanks for your reply but isnt it the same test just done differentley and also why would the docter not do the same test since that one was in the low range

The serum Testosterone test measures all forms of testosterone. I believe there are 3 types. free, weakly bound, and bound. almost all of the testosterone in your body is bound to SHBG sex hormone binding globulin. The free testosterone test shows the percentage of testosterone that is not bound to SHBG. The higher your free test levels the better. Hope this helps

sorry sd mike i still dont understand maybe im not explaining it the right way. before i started ant trt program i took a bllod test the one i took was (tot) testosterone and my levels were at 177 with a range of 400-1100. now since my testosterone levels were out of range my docter put me on testim and had me come back 4 weeks later to take another blood test to see were my testosterone levelsare at now. i took the blood test but instead of having the same range of test to guide me so i can see how much progress i made . when i looked at my tests it was not the same way they measured my total testosterone as before now it has me at 4.98% with reference between 1.68%-7.58%. now i have no idea how much i improved because its a total differnt merment its not telling me that its between 400-1100. my question once again is there any way of converting the percentage into a solid number

Sorry, i misunderstood you. I'm not sure how to convert those numbers. hopefully, someone can shed some light on this. best of luck.

I think SDMike was on the right track...it sounds like the first time they checked your TOTAL testosterone, which usually is in the 400-1100 range as you said. The second time is seems like the measured your FREE test, whose range is typically a smaller number (8.7 - 25.1 for example), though it's very possible that FREE testosterone could be given in percentage points. You should verify with your doctor... if this is the case, ask to have your TOTAL testosterone measured again (not sure why they didn't?)

hey the test I was just give said the my level was at 215 the range is 250 to 815 they gave me a script for androgel a test gel.. re test in a month .good luck to you
