I'm thinking you're on his property.

Wow! How big was it?

I don't really know- people always guess about their size but it's hard to say since they rarely stand on a bathroom scale. lol
this was a small to medium sized one though- probably not totally fully grown.
when you see a fully grown male, you know the difference... they are HUGE.

That is awesome. On my parents' 140 wood parcel in NC all the locals say there are still plenty of brown and black bears around, but we haven't seen any. Their property is all old growth mature forest surrounded by miles and miles of the same. I guess maybe the huge range land for them makes it hard for people to spot them?

a black one. :)

we were on our way to go breakfast and then to go buy some chickens. i built a coop.

i'll go take some pics of them- they are really cool looking.

awesome! when I was a kid we raised pheasants to turn loose. Now my parents just have cats n 'coons.... :worried:

Have there been any in attacks in your area?

well, yes and no.
people claim that they got charged by a bear all the time. It doesn't even make the paper though because it doesn't really make sense that a bear would charge at you, then turn away.

there was a story right near my house recently of a guy who left a sandwhich on his bumper and went inside. when he came out, there was a bear there that took a swipe at him. The guy apparently fought (or the bear just grabbed the sandwich and ran at that point). the man was on the local news and had a black eye and claw scratches.

Not to change the subject but Willow. You be lookin good in yo AVI.

Bears usually are quite scared of man, well pretty anything scares a black bear. We had a little schnauzer dog, about 15 lbs, that we would send outside when a bear comes around. He was great at scaring them up a tree. They will mock charge if they feel like they don't have anywhere to run. Stand your ground and call their bluff.

A couple weeks ago I was out driving on a logging road and the battery cable came disconnected in my jeep, So I pulled over and stopped to reattach it. A black bear came walking out of the bushes about 10 feet from me, he had his head down and saw me late, He looked shocked, hit the breaks, literally skidding to a stop, turned around and ran away as quick as possible.

This one's a good one, Last summer I was out at the lake house, and was getting back from Kayaking, and walking the wooded path from the water to the house. Along the way, stumbled upon a sleeping black bear under a tree. I walked by without disturbing him and watched him throughout the day rolling around under an old growth fur. After about 5 hours, we became impatient with him and tried to scare him off. He didn't care, even when we were 40 feet away yelling at him, and hitting him with rocks. We knew this bear must be sick. So we got closer and noticed he was missing the fur off his back legs and was bleeding all over. We finally pissed him off enough to move. We were shocked to see that his back legs were paralyzed, and he was dragging them behind him. We ending up shooting him and dumping his body off, higher up the mountain, close to a known Grizzly den, that has a mother and 2 young cubs. We could see blood on the road were the bear had been dragging himself down hill for what would have been at least a couple miles. He was a young male, that must have fallen from a tree.

I like wildlife.

Cubs scare me.... it means a real protective mama isn't far away. That must have been a bit exciting to wake up to!

that ain't shit, Mr. Maxx would tear that bear up. Did you go give it a hug? I bet they smell bad

For giggles, look up cat chasing bear on youtube. an odd site.

i wake up to it all the time, just not usually with my camera in my hand. :)

they aren't very aggressive, as jocques said. it's just the cubs you have to watch out for, cause mama bears ARE aggressive.
