both my parents were teachers, love them of course
but
their double standards tweak me.
example-

me: *grumbles cause i have to go back to work after 2 months off*
dad: Work is good for you son, most jobs are year round...wanting to only work 8 months is no way to get ahead!
me: but dad, you had summers off for 37 yrs of teaching
dad: son that's different, i had to take class to get my grad degree...
me: the rest of the work force doesn't get that luxury, they have to attent night school while working full time
dad: it's different for teachers son, we deserve a break our job is really hard

"fuck work, son!! bring back a qp of trainwreck for your old man and let's go take some bong rips together. im so proud of u!"

*bino wakes up from daydreams*

the workin man's a sucka.

I am not impressed with the teachers in the Ottawa school board.
Bunch of bums.
Teacher sick days bleeding public board

regarding your dad, yeah that's a double standard.
Maybe you should've gone to teacher's college?

no dad is gonna tell their kid it's ok to want to slack off

i dunno maing, after spending half of the year sleeping on the dirt in BFE i'm feeling entitled to a winter of slacking/and joosing out.
is that so much to ask?

Feeling entitled...

Looks like Bino's definitely taken to the gov't employee train of thought. Rnch Jr?

Teacher's union is killing Calif. They'll never balance the budget w/o cutting salaries of state workers.

Nothing is better then becoming a tenure teacher in a big city. You're set for life and never have to worry about performance!

I think that's more of a Union mentality as opposed to directly related to teachers, probably not uncommon in Michigan. My ex wife's grandfather was a teacher and retired as a principal in Montana, he worked for the railroad at one point, lost a leg in an accident, and he still did construction every Summer on his breaks to make money.

I'm married to a teacher and it's true every job has it's disadvantages and in general teachers are underpaid considering most states require a Masters Degree. But, getting every rinky-dink holiday off plus two months in the Summer sure is one big advantage.

And my wife would be the first to admit that there are plenty of jobs tougher than hers.

Can you say: "No money down! Interest only for the first five years! No income verification! Bad credit? No credit? No problem!!!" in Spanish?

They had a huge flap here on talk radio over Tennessee changing its regulations around teachers and testing. They had a teacher call in who was concerned about begin counted against if the student happened to be having a bad day on test day. So I thought: "Let's see... 20 students x 4 classes a day = 80 students. What are the chances all 80 of them are having a bad day at once? What if they had an even worse day on the pretest? What if some of them are having a better-than-average day?".

Then I realized. The teacher had no concept of averages, the law of large numbers, etc. etc. I sure hope that wasn't a math teacher that called the radio station.

I could get your foot in the door but your record would most likely keep you from being hired. :)

The bigger problem that will come with the "pay for test scores" scenario for teachers is that poor rural and urban schools are going to have the lowest level (below average) students. Therefore teachers with a choice will avoid those schools and they will be left with below average teachers.

Thus the "solution" will make the problem worse.

You pretest and test the same batch of students. They solved that problem a long time ago.

Why does it require a master's degree? I don't know, but I figured that (like most jobs) it would be easy.

Ohio just requires a degree in education, you can have a PHD and paid your dues teaching undergrads at university but you aren't qualified to teach a basic class in a high school. One of my friends had to go back and get an undergrad degree in education to become a teacher. Also, one of the issues with our system is that 2/3 of teachers that teach math and science don't have an education degree related to either topic.
