litter box theory

I have 2 cats and 3 litter boxes
I have the boxes aligned so when I change the oldest box
I replace with new litter,and move the other two boxes to the right
with the fresh batch of blended litter ( crystals combined with traditional clay)
being at the left
in this sytem there is always a "fresh" batch( well kinda always)
what confuses me is that the 2 of them seem to still space out their excrement equally between the boxes
though there is an "old" box,"new" box and one in between

one for piss and one for solids
but my laundry room space doesn't have room for 4
so I did 3 and I call bullshit
yeah sure maybe they don't like sharing
but I suspect I have some kind of territorial behavior in action here
such as "he just shit here,so I'm gonna go one better"

I had two cats, one of each gender, who shared a box for ten years with no complaints. And they weren't exactly pals, either, their relationship was, at best, a sort of uneasy truce.

The female is no longer living, though, and I've discovered that the male does most of his business outside.

did you explain the system to them? because if you didnt then they are just going to use the one that smells the least at the time they want to use the box...wouldnt you?
