Letterman Show...on Monday!!!

b fold the truth

Elite Strongman
Platinum
Turn your TV's and VCR's to the David Letterman show on Monday night. Willie Wessels (president of NASS) will be on the show for the ENTIRE hour lifting a variety of objects.

I expect it will be funny and GREAT to see a friend on the Letterman show.

What time does Letterman start (PST)? I hardly ever watch TV anymore...my roommate likes to watch every reality show there is, but I could monopolize the TV for this!

10:35 CST on CBS...not sure what time PST that would be.

i think i will watch it, this will be the first time ive watched something other than simpsons in a while. if there were more strongman/lifting related stuff on tv, i might watch tv more often.

Im kinda diappointed LOL I was hoping to see Willie flipping a big ass tire down Madison Avenue LOL But the couch was funny. I wonder what he is gonna lift next. Go Willie~

man i was dissapointed, they only showed him a few times. and they didnt show a great deal of interest either. i really would have liked to see them interview him, or feature him some more. it was cool to see him get some exposure though.

I wish that they could have pointed out that he DOES have Lekeumia (sp)...and is making a HUGE comeback despite everything.

So I saw a 200 lb couch, a 300 lb port-a-john, and a 425 lb mower, then I fell asleep. What did I miss?

(And I agree - they didn't really seem to give him his due...)

Willie was a side show. It sucks! I am a NASS athlete and was hopeing they were going to interview him or something. It turned out to be stupid human tricks. The show showed little interest and the plastic porta john, couch, tractor and safe were all bull shitted numbers. Late show staff controls what he does and does not do and I am sure Willie thought it sucked also. B Fold and Liftbig are the only one's I see calling it for what it was, a spectical. I have been to other sites and everyone is saying how awesome it was. I have met and spoke with Willie Wessel and the man deserved better than that. Strongman sport deserved better than that. It was a joke.

actually, this was a disgrace

he didnt do any actual events and they didnt even seem like they wanted him on the show

It wasn't a disgrace at all. Letterman could have REALLY made fun of him...but he WAS respectful.

Did you just expect The Late Show to have a bunch of implements laying around???

There wasn't much that he could have done and just a few weeks ago he was struggling with a 230 Atlas Stone. What he could have done with implements would NOT have been impressive at this point.

It was cool, we laughed, and with Willie's personality I'm sure that he loved it too and considered it a success. Both Willie and Dione knew that it was just gonna be him picking up this and that and that it would be funny and nothing serious.

I thought it was cool that he was on, but it would have really been cool if he could have been interviewed even briefly.
I think that would have made a big difference in getting the public awareness of Strongman a little stronger.

Granted it would've beren cool to interview him but 99% of the population doensn't give a shit about strongman. They don't want to hear him talk they want to see him pick up shit. That's what the show delivered.

as for impilments, Willie's spotter Ben is the NY NASS chairmen and I train in his back yard so there was a shit load of impliments to be had. But I am sure it wasn't Willie Wessels choice to pick up a damn couch.True no one really gives a damn about strongman and this didn't help the cause. I love this sport. It is what I do when I am not working or with my family. F*uck Letterman!

Ok, lemme' try this again more specific like.

I was talking to my GF on the phone and I told her I would call her back when I saw Willie on TV. His face was like a kid opening up presents for the first time. He acted like he was way too excited.

Why do I mention this?

When you do great things you should act like you have been there before. I think he did himself a minor discredit by acting on such glee. Sure he promoted N.A.S.S. but he could have been more humble and relaxed.

Bor, that was pretty much my point.

I am the only person my co-workers know that does Strongman. I don't see from them that don't "give a shit". I get immense intrest from them. They ask all sorts of questions. The more I tell them about it, the more respect and interest they have.

Getting the public educated and exposed to Strongman in their own community, with people they know personally, will peak their interest.

I for one, would love to see more Striongman support and interest here in the Northwest.

Dude... I'm sure Willie had a blast, whatever he was lifting.

I know I would have.

You are right...:)

Willie always has that smile and is the BEST representative that NASS could have had on the show. It was amazing to see him back at 215 too!!!!

I thought that it was great that David Letterman mentioned that Willie was wearing a North American Strongman Society shirt...most of the time he just sits back and laughs at the guys he has on his show. Other than the joke about the couch (which I thought was HILAROUS...LOL) he didn't seem to make fun of Willie at all.

Still...Willie is not able to do much with the actual implements yet that the average person can. It would not have been impressive to see him load a 300 pound Atlas Stone...because you see guys do that all the time at contests and on TV. I thought that what he did was pretty cool...all considering (especially with his health).

It was cool to see Ben Lambousis on the show too. I was telling my girlfriend that I thought it was Ben...then Willie said (after Letterman asked) that it was his spotter Ben with him. Pretty cool...

I'd love to be on the show...

I didnt get to watch it,but this is my view, going by what everyone has said.I wish they would have talked to him at least a little bit...just to get a quick run down on the basics of NASS,and/or strongman in general. As far as the things they had him doing go..Im sure they wanted things that appealed to the crowd...The crowd isnt going to relate so much to some of the events.A vehicle deadlift,"girl squat",or something of that nature would have been cool, but then again, those things would have been hard to setup and transport.
My overall opinion is that it had to have been better than nothing.I havent seen strongman anywhere on tv except for espn, and what has been shown on fsn,so even a little bit on a show like David Letterman is a good thing.Would things be any better if he had never went on the show?I dont think so.We all want great things out of the sport, but for now we have to take what we can get,and keep working towards getting more/better coverage.
