leg training at the gym...

What's up?

I work for the RCMP here in Ottawa, and get access to the free gym... it is perfect, except that it doesn't have a cage, or squat rack... It does have a smith machine, (which I like to do sumo squats on) and a leg press... so my question is... instead of squats... (with I know is the king, but can't be done) do you figure doing heavy leg presses with lunges would be the best thing I could do for good leg stimulation?

What do you guys\gals think? or what would you recommend for legs? I will do a search for other answers, but figured I'd see what you guys think of the top of your heads...

Thanks,

S.

I would still do freeweight squats. I'd be limited to a weight that I can clean and press and I'd have to do very high reps but I would still do it. If I had to dump the bar then I would do that too.

I would do front squats for lower reps. One of my favorite exercises.

Smith machines are good for hanging your towel on though.

Grab a dumbell in each hand, let them dangle by your sides, and squat away.

You can always find a way to do squats...if you really want to.

DB Squats... Duh... Why didn't I think of that... :o

When I have to workout at home (don't have squat rack or any machine) I squat with dumbells or I fill a backpack with books. For leg press my boyfriend helps and I press his weight.

if you cannot find a way to barbell squat, you are not looking hard enough.

I don't really think putting the barbell on a shelf, and half hazzardly slinging it on to my back would work... but thanks for the idea... ;)

I think I'll try the DB squat... I guess maybe super-setting that with a light barbell squat would do...

I'll keep you all posted... :)

These guys are right. If there is a will, there is a way. Look around, I'll bet you could find something if you really try. Chairs, sawhorses, barrels, desks, dressers, etc....You get the idea....

True enough... It's just difficult in the gym to find something that'll support the bar enough to go heavy...

But thanks guys... I do appreciate the help...
