leg press on smith

I saw a guy last night doing leg presses on a smith machine, laying flat on his back, feet on the bar pressing up. Anyone else do this, or is it really as ridiculous as it looked? Seems like that would be tough on the lower back, and your feet. I gotta hand it to the guy, though, he did have 6 plates on each side, and hit about 15 reps. I'm thinking maybe he lost a bet or was maybe just screwing around, trying something different.

It really is just as ridiculous as it looked.

lol, that guy was successful in combining two of the most unfunctional exercises in the book into one great, big waste of gym time.

If I can convince just one person, I feel fulfilled ,lol

It's amazing to me the amount of people that use that smith machine for squats, or anything for that matter. Every time I see somebody setting it up, then getting into position, I feel for them. The first time I ever did squats, I used one. It just didn't feel right, my body doesn't move that way.

I was box squatting on Monday and peered over to see a poor soul DEADLIFTING with the Smith Machine. He started up a conversation and asked about my routine. When he learned that I deadlift he asked if I think it's better to do it with freeweights or with the Smith. It was a really tough question so I thought I'd ask all of your advice before I answered him.

Just plain ridiculous. I have two at my gym that are broken down at the moment, divine intervention IMO, you would have thought every "trainers" workout regime is now ruined.

its funny, the gym I lift at right now has both of the smith machines broken down and it takes them months to get things fixed. I was talking to a guy who was saying he cant do his benches now! I talked him into doing free weight benches and hes loving it now. Wish they would toss out those stupid machines and bring in 2 more power racks.

I like squats on the Smith b/c you don't have to wear out your core and back. You can just really isolate the quad.
i will admit i do this sometimes... maybe every other week or so... and i do legs the day after deadlifting... so i will get crazy lower back pumps when i squat...
i have found it much more effective if you place your feet out in front 6in-1ft and lean back against the bar... :coffee:

I personally use the Smith for a lot of stuff that I have a hard time holding my lower back on (existing lower back problems) - shrugs, SLDLs and bent over BB rows.

However -- yes I've seen people do the SMith leg press. I've done it myself once w/ my trainer last year. My question is, how the fuck do you get the bar OFF the rack w/ your feet? You can't. You have to have someone roll it off for you. THEN, how the fuck do you get it locked back IN?? You have to roll the bar. And you're layign down there w/ your whole torso exposed to this friggen bar that could fall down on you because it rolled off your shoe???

Screw that buddy, I'll stick w/ the leg press.

I don't like them, nor do i prescribe them to anyone.

I am however looking forward to one day trying the new 3d smith machines.

.....anyone ever see the old pics/footage of Arnold,Platz etc doing Vertical Press on a press machine??

I swear I saw a pro in the last 7 years doing them in a training video somewhere

My old gym had a great one, it was only a few years old. I believe it was made by Nebula that makes a really great regular leg press, company is based out of Versailes Ohio. The weight you could use on it was more closely related to what you could squat, it was a bit higher still. Dont get the mechanical advantage of pushing the weight up an incline angle since its at 90 deegrees.

I want to try one too, but they are not really 3D as they are advertised.

The original smith is only 1 Dimensional - up and down.

The 'new' smith is only 2D - up, down forward, back

3D would involve a side to side motion also - no point in a 3D smith then...

HA. You got me there big guy! But hey, we kneI havent seen any yet though.

Back to the smith machine leg presses, I saw that Vince Girdonia (or whatever that guy's name was) was pictured doing them in Robert Kenedy's leg manual. Of course he as doing them barefoot...

I have done leg press with smith machine. In that time, my trainer said that it was because my hamstrings were lagging. Of course she helped me put the bar in the rack after every set.

Then my trainer, after going to some couses told me that we would not continue to do that exercise because it does strain the lower back even at very low weight. The alternatives are wide stance leg press with the seat back parallel to the foot pad or one leg press.

The ideal alternative, unless you have some injury forcing otherwise, is free-weight barbell squat.

wow, no offence but your trainer needs to be mentioned in the "morons at the gym" thread. for weak hamstrings, any lifter with an ounce of knowledge would have you doing good mornings or SLDLs.
