Leg press BS

There is a guy in my gym who put a lot of plates on the leg press put hardly moves a few inches (and he is not working his calves)

What does that work, apart from the ego and the look-at-how-much-I-can-lift show-off attitude ?

this is extremely typical and only works the ego!!!Personally i get nothing out of leg presses, some it may work for, but for those that do get results i can garuantee that they are doing a full range of motion..

dont agree. sometimes I will load up the squat bar to over my 1rm & just hold the bar on my shoulders for a few seconds & then re-rack it. Its to get your CNS used to a heavier weight. (I think theyre called static holds).

Ive never heard of that, im sure i can carry a lot more on my shoulders than i can actually squat with proper form..I dont really see how this would help?? seems more psychological..

I hope you are throwing a grand on that bar, because i don't understand how just putting the weight on your back can help. Nothing personal, but i have never seen this, heard about it, or read about it.

read about overloading the CNS to relax/accustom the golgi tendon organs to increased load. similar to pushing out against a door frame and then walking out, your arms feel lighter with less load.

i thought static holds first off was to train gripw here you deadlift as much as you can hold once, and then hold onto it (without straps of course) and just hold on till you drop it to train grip.

but also i guess if u think about what shes talking about maybe u train stabalizers like ur back abs and sides and stuff?

He could very well be your typical brainless egotistical sloppyass form don`t know shit about training get out of my gym and take your ugly sister with you cuz your wasting precious space butthead. But then again he could be employing a techinque similiar to rackouts. The closer one gets to the end of a movement the easier the workout weight is, so he " may " have overloaded the legpress machine above his normal workout weight to stress the upper end of the movement.

Then again...he simply may be your typical brainless egotistical sloppyass form don`t know shit about training get out of my gym and take your ugly sister with you cuz your wasting precious space butthead. :chomp:

Pump on .....

Thats nothing. There are guys who load 2x to much weight on the squat rack, and then squat about 2 inches and come back up letting out a LOUD grunt like they just lifted something. When in reality if they put their ass in the hole that weight would come crashing down like a sack of bricks.....

Very good observation..give them the benefit of doubt although the more colorful description is most likely the correct one.. :chomp:

This is a little different scenario, working your grip, and the supposed adaptation of the CNS to the stress of the load is quite different. Personaly with all the things you can do in the gym to improve, this one seems to be more of an ego boost, i mean if i want my bench to go up i am not going to do static holds, i am going to thrash my sticking points.

Doing walkouts for squats with more than your 1RM is fairly common, mostly for powerlifters I think. Definitely helps your CNS, but also helps your core (just trying to stay upright with all that weight!) and helps psychologically.

I also like board presses on bench for this reason. I can do so much more weight with 4 and 5 boards (even 3 boards), so I just get used to unracking it and handling it.

A guy named Pete Sisco developed a program that utilizes static holds and very small ranges of motion. The program, if you read it, seems heretical (in that you end up working out less than once a week). My buddy uses some of the principals, however, and is seeing results (or so he says).

I'm not for it, nor am I really against it. Just take it with a grain of salt, I suppose.

On leg press then its ego, on squat, bench and deadlift-usually done from a pin position on the rack then I could buy it. Being able to walk out with a weight is sometime the hardest part of squating cause the transfer of weight from one leg toanother while setting up is tough. I tryed to walk out with 500 sunday and let me tell you it was much harder than 470 which I squated. just to get my CNS to adapt I will work on walkouts. but in this case just another idiot

"Static Holds and Partial Reps

The objective of these exercises is to get you used to holding very heavy weights at arms length. By holding supra-maximal weights, you condition your nervous system and motor reflexes to accept this high form of loading and muscular tension. "

Thank you Ms. page wont load for me prolly this goddamn netscape..ill check it later though :qt:

You're smart, though, and do the heavy walk-outs for a specific purpose. Methinks most of the leg press jockeys just load up too much weight because they don't know better :)

Hey wait a minute! ;)

I do my squats for reps at 405 and then go on to leg presses with full range of motion at 900lbs. (hoping to get to 1000lbs on my birthday). Just what exactly is wrong with leg presses?
