Lat ideas...

Can someone give me some ideas on new lat training?

I have no problem with shoulders and traps.. but my lats suck?

any ideas??

deadlifts, narrow grip pulldowns, anything to do with ur midback, its a common misconception that wide pulldowns and pullups build a wide latspread when in reality they dont. stick to the basic mid back exercises and keep the weights heavy

pull ups/lat pull downs ... bend over rows ... t bar rows ... deadlifts ... all that will hit them, deads the most. hell, the deads will get your whole freaking body larger

it's not misconception. it depends on the freakin person. my lats are fairly wide (and thick) for my size and compared to my other body parts. they are one of my best parts and ever since i started lifting i have mainly focused on pullups (more pulldowns when i first started lifting until i learned better).

PULLUPS ARE GREAT
(and don't forget the variations on them)

I understand that deadlifts hit the mid-lower back, but how much does it affect the lower outer lats???

It affects your whole back and body. The Deadlift is one of the most important excercise because it works so many muscle groups. The lats contract either to pull weight or to hold it. Whne doing deads the lat flex to hold a weight it would not naturally be able to pull, but this menas the muscle are in constant contraction to hold the muscle and this leads to growth because of the intense muscle stimulation over such a long range of motion and time.....

just to add - bent over rows should be a staple in a routine. Not standing rows as most in the gym perform them. Bump again for deads, and pullups

rippedtrojan , can wide grip exercises build a wide back- yes they can, but working ur midback harder like narrow grip pulldowns and close grip pullups, not all the way wide, will work better. why is that you ask? well its because of the range of motion, with a real widegrip pullup ur back is only going halfway, it is a very small range of motion as compared to a narrow grip pulldown where ur back goes thru the full range of motion.
both wide and narrow work on ur back, but if ur going for a wide latspread make the narrower exercises ur main focus and then use wide grip pulldowns and pullups to augment them, use them as an auxillary lift.

mmmm... sounds tasty! unfortunately my deadlifts are sorry... I JUST did them for the first time about a week ago... I tried to be a hero and put too much weight on there... lower back is still tight/tender... (still been working out... even did squats the other day (with tight form!) and back hyper-extensions today (hmm... Mr. Lower back tightened up a little from that one too!) no sharp pains anywhere (except my pride!) not gonna do deadlifts this week and next week I'm taking a week off of working out to go to California with my GF, but the week after, I'm getting right back on that horse (with less weight and STRICT form of course!) and try to get me a taste of some of that there! :D

lusting for lats,

Forrest

Thanks guys..
I have been messing with pull downs and T- Bar.
I will design a new program and incorp. dead lifts as the main exersice.
