Knee Problem

I can lift my right leg behind me, touching my ass with my right heel. However, I cannot do the same with my left unassisted. In fact, when I pull my leg back behind me (as if to stretch the quad) without pulling on my ankle with my hand, I get a sharp pain in my lower-outer knee/knee-cap of my left leg.

What would cause this?
Any way to remedy it?

go to a doctor and make sure its not a ligament rip. hate to say this, but it very well could be. but it also could very well be some minor cartilage damage which is repairable.

What would happen, were it a ligament tear? I squat and deadlift without pain, and it doesn't bother me unless I try to move in that direction.

Also, should I see a specialized doctor, or any ordinary one? I wouldn't wanna throw down my 15 minutes and copay just for a dumbass to look and say "don't lift" or something.

the more specific a doctors area of study, the better the advice he can give you to steer you in the right direction to recovery. just cuz u squat and deadlift without pain doesnt mean in 10 years you wont be crippled at the knee. get it checked out asap.

It doesn't sound life or death but it's something to look into. It could be a flexability imbalance and somehow pulling on the knee when it hits its limit. If you had a torn tendon or ligament, you'd know it.

An orthopedist is what you want and one familiar with sports medicine. I would look for a group which will generally have specialist in each body part. I have 3 separate orthos that I've seen for different bodyparts in the past 2 years - I told them I'm gradually working through the office body-part by body-part. I'm also lucky enough that my co-pay is honored in what is probably one of if not the best practices in the country.
