Knee Cracking????

ok guys heres the quick rundown. i kinda tweaked my knee a little getting down out of a penske truck, didnt even notice it til later, didnt hurt or feel wierd. later that night my knee felt kinda tight, then became a little sore inside not to the touch, yada yada went to dr. he was not real helpful,it was a orthopedic to btw, he saw i might have torn cartidge or strained it i explained it didnt hurt all the time but my concern was a joint crack noise i got when i went up steps with it or was getting up form a squat or down positon. non poinful just noisy. i told him i was active adn in the gym with no pev problems ever with my knees he prescribed PT. did it for 2 weeks adn not much difference, im now about a month and half later after injury, it gets irritated sometimes if strained or used hard not painful to walk or run or anything, the crack is still there i started dosing up on fishoil and glucosamine and chondrotine, what are your thoughts ideas?

Well, I am probably going to call down the thunder because they seem to be so ingrained as useful, but there is little evidence that glucosamine and chondroitin do anything. Some will fight tooth and nail over that sighting anecdotal experiences, but the more the compunds are studied the less they seem to do anything. However, there have been no side effects established either, so if you don't mind spending the money, it at least isn't hurting you. The point is, if your knee is seriously bugging you still and you are worried, get a second opinion definitely. Your knee is too valuable to be left to supplements only.

I have cracking in my ankle and one shoulder using glucosamine and chondrotine, has been helpful and made it almost non-existant unless heavy weights are being lifted.

My left knee cracks all the time when going up the stairs and doing squats. Not painful just cracks. I dont have insurance so get an x-ray and let me know whats up!!!

I think the key with chondroiton / glucosamine is that they won't help much with severe arthritis (which was one of the major studies "against" the effects). Same goes with a joint that is injured somewhat severely either through continual wear or an impact.

However, if you have the cracking and no pain yet, my guess is that this can still help you - or be worth a try at least. After all, nothing can repair a really f-ed up joint.

One thing I find VERY promising and interesting is that after identifying the compound with a "marker" of some sort, a couple of studies found that not long after either injestion or injection, the "marked" chondroiton was found in damaged cartilage. Adequan is a form of this (primarily) that is injected IM into dogs and horses. It was found almost immediately in the damaged joint.

Some bros have injected it and have indicated good results. Of course, you must have a prescription from a vet for dog version - but you do not for the horse version. And it is fairly expensive.

If my joints get worse, I will likely try it sometime in the future, but will stick with supplements for now (with relatively poor absorption).

You tore your meniscus, go get a MRI.
prolly so! after a nasty, slippery fall at work; my knee started that way, "cracking" or "popping"..got worse over time...when the meninscus popped i was ON THE FLOOR! i thought i was going to either pass out/cry like a newborn when it happened.

ortho surgery is a breeze compared to the pain i went thru when it let loose.

now my OTHER knee is about to let loose..... :worried:

Yeah, that's what happened to me. I blew out my left knee, tearing my meniscus and acl, had two operations. About 6 months into recovery I blew out my right knee, tearing the meniscus and acl! They say this is sometimes common because the other knee is bearing all the weight during recovery so it becomes weaker. All together I've had 2 scopes, 2 menicus repairs, and 2 acl reconstructions! Needless to say I cannot watch knee injuries on tv when they replay them in slow motion, haha!

agree on the over compensation on the "good" knee! this is what happened to me.

worker's comp was SOOOOO slow approving the right knee surgery i strained/damaged my "good" left knee. :(
