just saw someone get stuck

Skipped out of work quick to sneak in an early workout. This high school kid was squatting behind me on another rack...or at least hovering around a rack. He had a few of his boys with him...and granted...they are probably all 17 or so so none of them were sizable. This kid was the biggest, prob 6'2 but lanky and not filled out at all. You could tell he was the ringmaster though. This kid has 315 on the bar and was looking around for someone to spot him. I ignored because there was NO WAY he was squatting it....lol. Some old guy said he'd spot him and this kid gets under it fearlessly. I'm thinking, what the fuck is he doing???!! I've been lifting long enough to size someone up quick to know if its a weight they should be messing with and my stomach told me no on this kid. Anyway, he goes down and ever so slowly, with the guy helping under his arms, he squeeks one out...then goes for 2....ohh jeez....the guy is really tugging now....then goes for 3! He gets stuck deeeep at the bottom and he just couldn't get out from under the bar...the guy had to pull it back off of him. The funny thing was, his form was good (or the sheer weight for his undeveloped frame perfectly smooshed him). He's all embarassed and his boys who were curling come over and they were like, "How much was that?"...and he proudly shouts "315!". I'm dying.....and then the unthinkable...it gets better. Now I have to believe he is wrenched or at least scared and exhausted from that....but no, I look up after one of my sets and the fucker has added another assortment of smaller plates...prob. an additional 30 lbs or so.....lol. I almost yelled at the old guy because he goes over to spot him again. This kid needed to be told, "Buddy, too much weight for you. Are you serious?" Again, kid gets under it and the old guy is literally hugging him at this point from behind, and he lowers the weight...and gets stuck. What a fucking moron. The best part is if I'm not mistaken, my buddy saw this kid get stuck on the incline bench under a bar about 6 months ago. Kid has no clue what his body is capable of...no clue what his maxes are. I'll bet he is juicing and is just anstonished he got a bit stronger. How can you be that goofy and careless?? I felt like yelling at the old guy for encouraging that dangerous shit.....terrible, but funny as hell.

yeah sometimes you can look at somebody and instantly tell yourself, "there is no fucking way he is going to try that. lol he is. let's see how this goes." the kid will get injured soon enough. i'm not going to say he deserves it, but he has it coming.

Yeah but then there are times where you think that and they just throw up the weight. Ive seen a kid I would say be around 5"8 or so weighing prob under 200 wh doesnt look built at all come in and put on 225 to warmup with and then two sets later hes doing reps with 315 maxing out at 365.

I find the best cure for people like this is to laugh at them, and make sure they know youre laughing at them. If they dont ask you why youre laughing, theyll typically just go do something else.

I am slow, so I can't find the humor in a spoted triple w/ good form. Again, I am a fat powerlifter so I know very little. And anyone that fails in the hole must be too stupid to chose their weight correctly...or they are making sure they are really maxing..wait, I am stupid, no real lifters get stuck in the hole. I need to retrain my puney brain on how the big boys do it.

What do you squat?

I don't find it too particularly stupid. Granted I don't think he should've added more weight after the first heavily spotted rep, but nothing horrible. At least it was better than the tools at my gym that load it up and barely move.

I get stuck all the time, but never had a spotter. Learned how to pop the weight off my back and release so it hits the ground instead of my spine. I've seen plenty of guys I thought would get buried by the weight rep it out easily...and plenty of big guys who could barely squat at all.

This is why people should use the damn helping supports so you can drop the weight in a safe manner! Dumb Asses!

Good thing about squatting ATF is I can just lean a bit when in the hole and slide the weight off onto the bars of the squat rack. When working up to my max I expect to get stuck and prefer to dump it than have a spotter anyway. I only use a spotter if I don't have a way to safely dump the weight.

I've never found a decent spotter for squatting anyways. I had one dumbass run over to try and help me, hugging me and pulling me, threw me so far off balance I dropped the bar anyways.

I never squat anywhere but with a power rack, and have never had a problem dumping it if I got stuck. If I had 2 spotters, it might be easier to spot, but still they'd just be standing there. I don't want anyone to touch the bar while I'm lifting. My GF stands guard now, she'll tell jerkoffs to get out of the way.

I always knew you were gay

man I know you guys are just jealous....nobody can match my 135lb squat!! I go down all 4" man, no fake squats here!! you should see how much I can LEG PRESS!!!

ya -- no shit -- you never do know -- there are guys at my gym -- for example, one kid -- 21 years old 160lbs about 5'8 -- benches 315 on his last set for a good 6+ reps... kinda sad for me :( lol

I am recovering from a back injury and the other day I got stuck with very little weight on the bar, during benching. This was because my lumbar was in so much pain from the arc, that I basically couldn't move. I rolled the weight off. Nothing funny there, I was simply on a battle to recover.

I am much better now, back to squatting, deading and benching and ramping 'em up.
Lets go !
POWERLIFT!

AL, yeah, I squat 325 for 5, not great, but really not bad for an ex-rugger with two ripped up knees. I don't any lower than 3 reps, but that's just me and my knees. My point was (that I found funny) was that his clearly couldn't handle the weight for one rep, let alone 3. He is also underdeveloped. Why fuck with a potentially dangerous exercise like the squizzot when you can't even handle the weight without someone monkeying it up for you? I guess it's one way to grow with forced reps with good form, but at a HUGE risk of injury. It almost looked as though his form on the way down was a function of the weight heading south, you know? He had no power under that bar..

I totally see your point. I think a few missed it. Obviously the spotter was applying a good amount of help to the kids chest to get the weight up.

Reminds me of Space Cowboys with the bench scene.

I see 3 things usually.

1. Most people don't do barbell squats. Or deadlifts for that matter.

2. I see guys load up 315 here and there and proceed to bang out 10 reps like they are king kong. Only problem is they stop about 4-5" above parallel(bottom of thigh). I consider parallel to be top crease of thigh at parallel which is basically almost a full squat and significantly lower than bottom of hamstring used as a parallel guage.

3. The guys that load up 225-315 and then proceed to do quarter squats.

One time I was in the gym and this guy in the power rack next to me was squatting 315 for reps and doing slightly better than half squats with a belt on and I noticed him looking at the weight I was using a few times. I finally got annoyed and put 315 on the bar and dropped it until my ass crack pretty much hit the ground and let it set there for about 2 seconds before I drove it up belt free.

There's squatting and then there's squatting.

I consider my technique excellent in most major lifts as I trained with national level powerlifters for awhile and even they went to legit parallel.

315 might not seem like a lot, and it isn't compared to consistent squatters with years of training, but I respect anyone that can drop that weight all the way down raw and bring it back up.

I hear you and agree on the respect of that move. My ass and thighs are pretty big from squats and I always know that when I get deep, my ass has me...lol. It's that deep spot where you feel your legs let go and your ass takes the driver's seat. With my little giggle from yesterday though, even if I couldn't lift shit, that would still be funny to me. The kid totally disregarded the laws of physics and has no clue how his body responds to resistence training. I mean, who have you seen get killed on a 3 rep set like that never having the weight at any point in time add even MORE weight? It's insanity....and I think it was at the risk of overcoming the embarassing stick in front of his boys. The high price of reputation these days....maybe I was once like him.............but I doubt it..lol

yeah...I hear you AL and I'd agree......IF there was some old guy bearhugging and wrenching these guys up along with their "good form". You missed my point at "hello"

i hear you JW on the guy giving him bear hugs and him continuing to add weight to the bar... i've got stuck a few times on singles with a LITTLE more than i could manage and have been given a bear hug on those ocassions :o that's just part of the game... obviously the kid tried a little too hard but you have to give him credit for going ATF with good form unlike some of the bigger jerkoffs who do a 4" pelvic thrust on the same weight.

BTW, it's not always possible to size up guys and say "this guy can't lift that". check this out:

that's a 190kg (~420lb) clean and jerk at a body weight of 60 kgs (~130lbs)! suleymanoglu looks like there's no way he could squat/deadlift that weight, yet he clean and jerked it!

That dude is a freak.

I've had workouts where I've failed on the first working set and then continued to get my 5x5. Maybe this kid knows he can get 360 on a good day with good form.

Even though I'm in accord with his comments, I'm going to give Al a -1 to save a forest.
