Just got my Blue Belt!

first post here guys....i'm a recreational martial artist. i've always had an interest in controlled fighting, boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, etc. i've focused mainly on jiu-jitsu in my later years of training mainly b/c of the awesome workouts and friendships that evolve from intense sparring. i just moved to West Virginia from Texas, where i trained for a few years off and on. being a small market area, i never thought i'de find a decent academy to train at. i was wrong! it's huge here in Charleston, WV!! i just got back from a Royce Gracie Seminar that lasted a little over 2 hours. the theme was "back to the basics". so, anyways, after training off and on for about 3 years, i finally received my Blue Belt....what an awesome feeling! i'm not big on the whole belt system, but i can't argue with Royce coming to me after a battle on the mat and saying, "You...Blue Belt." anyways, i'm on cloud nine...thanks for listening!

Nice! Good job on the blue broly!

I'm hoping this summer I'll have some more time so that I can get back into BJJ again... My time right now is being focused on Muay Thai.
I think that if you want to learn BJJ it is best to go to the source, I use to train at the Renzo Gracie academy here in N.Y... One cool thing about Renzo is the way he gives out the belts some times, There was a kid there who had been working his way up for a while, during a training session he was rolling with a Brown belt and holding his own, during a break in the action Renzo sneaked up behind him and presented him with a Purple belt and gave him a hug. The whole room broke into claps and cheers, it was cool as hell! There is a sence of family in every respectable BJJ dojo.

Awesome my man!!! a buddy of mine (on the boards as well, but I'll let him say it) was blued by Royce. That's got to be a wonderful feeling. That's something to tell your kids! That's what sets us all apart from the rest of the population- desire & drive! Enjoy it buddy!!!!!!!

kimblesaurus,

I do BJJ as well. Getting blue is awesome bro! I had a couple of freinds go to Royce's seminar in N.C. before he came to VA. The only problem with Royce's seminars is that he always shows the exact same things but he is a great guy and fun to work with.

Since your in Charleston,WVA remember that Renzo Gracie comes to Radford University every summer as well!

:)

why dianabolic55, whoever could you be speaking of? I am a purple now, did you know that yet? how are all things with you? i am sorry to hear about you shutting down your school. let's chat my friend.

mmaguy,
thanks for the heads up! i'll look for renzo this summer. also, just a little background from me...i started training bjj in lubbock, tx. my first instructor was Klay Pittman. he was one of four guys in texas that earned a black belt from carlos machado. these four were the first black belts to be promoted under c. machado. from there i moved to ft. worth, tx. i trained briefly under travis lutter. he was also one of the four to earn black belts. both of these individuals are unbelievable bjj practitioners. Klay Pittman is know for his extreme technicality and execution. Travis Lutter is an all round mma fighter. he is a heavywieght that moves like he's 30lbs lighter than he really is! hope everybody finishes this week with great training, and i'll be talking to you guys later....

whats the deal with these seminars?

if you want more info, check the internet for the gracie's seminar's and where they'll be. or any other BJJ seminar for that matter....it's a good way to see what's going on outside your own gym!
