usually adding stength is the way to add muscle

This muscle mass without strength concept didn't even exist 10 years ago. In the 70s and 80s when I was growing up bodybuilders trained for strength under the belief that stronger muscles were bigger muscles.

I was waiting to get on the T-bar at Gold's Venice a few years ago. Flex Wheeler, Paul Dillet and some other pro were working out together. I asked if I coud work in... and one of them politely went to take a 45 lbs plate off for me... I stopped him and added an extra plate on top of what they were training with. That was the first real insight that I had that pros weren't as strong as they used to be.

yeah, anything else like that ever happen to you? Not to go off topic or anything but it really is good stuff!!

OAKLEY, try HST. It's growth oriented. In any case, eat a lot and consistently move heavier weights for reps. Rep scheme? Got me there. Currently discussing it with casual, among other things.

Oh Jesus, I'm embarassed now. :( I should have written my post more carefully.

Guys... it was NOT impressive. It more reflected that they weren't using jack sh-t compared to what a pro would use in days gone by. It wasn't that I was lifting a lot - it was that they weren't lifting heavy at all.

I've seen Ronnie Coleman deadlift. He would usually train with the powerlifter crowd at Gold's... not with the other body builders. Ronnie was the rarity becasue he would lift heavy.

You had a couple bodybuilders at Gold's who were very strong guys... but honestly I think a lot of the guys on this board probably work with more weight than most of the pros I've seen train.

My honest assessment is that the majority of pros I've seen training were working with weights that were average for what a strong guy in a gym would use, but they weren't lifting impressive amounts of weight. Rarely have I seen a pro using spectacular weight.

Ok, this might sound stupid, but if the pros bodybuilders are not lifting all that much weight, how did they get so big (besides juice of course)? Is it just from years of lifting, or are they doing more sets when they lift, or just eating better? I don't understand what the difference would be between pro bb's in the 70's and 80's and the pro bb's of today. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Agreed... it's the growth, insulin, and amount of gear for many of them. Bodybuilders of old were strong guys. You don't see the same kind of strength athletes amoung today's bodybuilders.

Don't get me wrong. They are still strong compared to normal guys... but they aren't remotely as strong as I would expect them to be.

A few of the guys at Gold's are enormously strong... but usually they are the guys who CAN'T get their pro cards.

And yes, I still train at Gold's Venice... just not nearly as often. It's got some hard memories.

I used to train there and I hated it but I have to concurr...When I was there I was natural and I squatted more than anyone I ever saw there. I can remember seeing a few Pros that train there on and off go through an entire workout with warm up weight...then go talk to the women and waddle on the treadmill then waddle to the firehouse...lol made me never want to do growth
