It's preposterous to say that everyone is going to react the same way to abuse, or that they "should" or they "must" react a certain way -- "and if they don't, it's only because they're 'attention whores!'"
People don't all react the same way. Some will hunker down and hope it goes away; some will pretend it didn't happen. Some will fight back, with fists or a gun... or by trying to organize a mass political movement.
People used to be ashamed of a cancer diagnosis. Now we have The Race for the Cure and pink ribbons all over everything. Is that "attention whoring"? Puh-lease.
