Jump Squats?

hellboy

New member
Yesterday at the gym I saw a guy doing some kind of jumping squats with 225 on the bar. He'd go into a deep squat and then jump straight up into the air. The bar would propel a couple inches off his back at the top and then land back onto his back when his feet came back to earth. It looked (to my untrained eye) amazingly stupid and painful. Ok... and it kinda looked cool too cause I know I could never do it... but.

I just assumed that he was a moron. Was I wrong? Is there really a place for this exercise in a workout?

the bar shouldn't be coming up that high off his back IMO

ive done em with dbs too

but....225 sounds like a lot of weight for that movement

even Jud Logan who squats in the 700lb range used only 100lbs!
And an athlete he trained used 88lbs on his way to a 320lb powerclean. That guy is doing them for the wrong reason :)

It's for ballistic dynamic strength - spend too long on the ground and your not getting the benefits. Poliquin says 20% of power snatch. Russians say 20% of limit clean and jerk. And the heaviest C&J is just under 600lbs...so the strongest and most powerful guys in world only use 120lbs tops :D
