Hey, just wanting to know what most of you thought about Judo as being good for self defense? I wanted to take BJJ but aparently they don't have a place here in ames and all they have is Judo, karate, and ty.

judo came about from jujitsu, kind of a sport version of jujitsu, so its not as in depth of jujitsu, but has alot of good applications. It was first used so jujitsu players could sport fight, but not kill each other off with the more unlimited jujitsu techniques. Theres lots of basics covered, like proper falling and stuff. Also many takedowns, some groundwork and a little stand up techniques, such as standing armbars. Good stuff to learn, give you a good foundation on which to build some bjj, if you find that opportunity in the future. Could be very useful on the street.

If you want pure self defense your best bet is to find a good self defense instructor who specializes in that.. but it wont be as much fun as finding an art that you like that you can stick with for years

judo is great :) my current school spends about 60% of the time doing matt/ground techniques and 40% on throws/standing techniques where most bjj schools will spend like 95% of the time on the ground so you will normally get more ground instruction at the bjj schools.. some judo schools only spend like 20-30% on the matt so check out some classes and see what its like..

what i do like about judo for self defense is that your best weapons will keep you on your feet and not on teh ground.

1 throw 1 guy.. throw someone once in a fight and he is down

chokes are a great out in a fight.. if you put one on a guy you wont permanently hurt them and you can walk away safely

my instructor used to teach self defense so we do go through some of the basics of self defense but i dont think that is the norm.. my current instructor is the only one to teach me self defense.

bjj and judo although very different at the core are becoming very similar due to people cross training.. most judoka i know take some bjj or jujitsu to help the ground game in competition.. and a bunch of the bjj guys i know also train in sambo/judo/wrestling to help there standing game..

basically anyone 2 people from any 2 of those arts/styles should be able to help each other become more effective regardless if training for street or sport

good luck and feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need help finding schools.

Awesome, thanks alot for the info guys. I think i'm gonna join the one here in ames.

Judo is great for self defence and great for your physical health.

My dad was a judo national champion (then turned instructor) in one of the European countries. I used to watch him train and throw guys to the ground. It was great having such a powerful dad :) ... not to mention the little perks that came with it ie. very popular chic of a judoka hehehe, plus the fear and respect that people have for you because they know you can bash them up!!! ;)

I personally adore Judo. I took it for a couple of years, and it definately is a great sport. Its very realistic, in the sense of grappling, and quick takedowns, and obviously chocking and submissions. Its very fun indeed.
