Its those little things....

Woke up late this morning and didnt have time to make breakfast. On top of that, I forgot to grab my mid morning meal before I rushed out the door.

So by 9, I am starving. Pissed off about missing my meals. (Makes me feel like my workout the day before was worthless).

I finally decide that I have no other choice but to head to the vending machines and find some peanuts or something to eat.

Get there, and my choices are Pop Tarts, Zingers, Little Gems, or Twinkies. I stand there for a moment, stomach grumbling. Nothing seems worth it.

Then i notice something out of the corner of my eye. In the refrigerated machine (usually has stuff that can be microwaved) there is a turkey breast pita pocket. I hadnt even thought to look there because they usually have food that needs to be cooked, and I couldnt take that much time without getting into trouble.

Grabbed it up, took it back to my desk, and wolfed it down. Between 6-8oz shaved turkey breast (a guess), a pita pocket, romain lettuce, and some mayo. Helluva lot better than a twinkie.

You should always make enough time to prepare meals. . . .not having enough time is no excuse.

im going to have to dissagree with this one. things happen, its what life is all about. missing 1 meal or two occasionally is ok. just as long as it doesnt become a habbit.

I have a box at my desk filled with cans of tuna, protein bars, nuts, rice cakes and other food. I even keep proetin shakes, hardboiled eggs, condiments, etcetera in the break room fridge. I occasionally forget to bring my lunch, so having some stuff at work has saved me from the evil vending machine!

Wow, a little harsh man, we all do our best, but sometimes shit happens...

Yeah, today was just one of those days.

I usually keep protien bars at my desk, but havent lately and today it bit me in the ass.

Trust me, not having time isnt an excuse. Today I woke up 20 minutes before I had to be at work. I was late.

My schedule is extremely busy, probably worse than most. Up until this summer, I worked no less than 50 hours a week. I was married with 2 kids. Now I am dealing with a divorce. Have my kids 1/2 of the time on my own. Go to school 3 days a week from 5-10. Im getting my house ready to sell due to the divorce.

I dont know too many people that would want to be walking in my shoes right now. From 6am until 10pm, I am rushing. And its not fun shit.

AND YOU'RE Blind Deaf and Mute???!!!

Sucks to be you man.

Also, I hate vending machines for that, peanuts are the only saving grace on those miserable days.

I have an extremely busy schedule, but I always pack around a myoplex or a meal replacement bar. . . .its that simple.

You work around your schedule. . . as far as I am concerned if you are serious about gains. . you will do whatever it takes to stay fed.

Woops, I guess my point didnt get across in that last post.

My point was that if I can do it with my schedule, anyone can do it. Time isnt an excuse, it never has been and never will be. Saying I dont have enough time, is really saying, "I dont want it bad enough." in my mind.

Today I fucked up, next time I will be prepared.

I like to keep some protein powder on hand for those emergencies. It takes a few seconds to mix up a shake and down it.

you guys all realize that the protein in those bars or premixed shakes is denatured and thus rendered biologically innactive.....meaning your body won't digest it.....it is something the supp companies have to do to improve the shelf life of their stuff. The more you learn the more real food you eat....lol

No matter how well you plan anything, there are times life DOES get in the way. As much as I love to train, it is far from my #1 priority in life. And yet, I still make great gains.

However, if you plan well, life may not get in the way as often.:) Or when it does, you are better prepared to deal with it.

Like, try planning to have enough food when your 12 hour shift becomes a 24 hour shift. Sometimes shit happens you live you learn and you move on. The are no good excuses but there are extenuating circustances that must be allowed for in life.

I thought you might chime in on this Scottsman. Ive seen you post before about your hectic work schedule and extreme hours in remote areas where a gym, or food isnt readily available. Sometimes we get thrown a curve, and you just have to deal with it.

IL, Ive never heard anyone say that before. So I haven't read into it. Im a little confused. Can you lead us to the information you are referencing?

It does make sense, just like non pasteurized dairy products are much easier for your body to digest. The pasteurization process is to lengthen the shelf life. But it doesnt render all of the nutrients 100% useless.

I want to learn more about it. Tell us what you know please.

Yeah with my job you have to kind of plan for the apocalypse in order to be prepared. Nothing like planning on a nice sunday of rest just to have them call at 7am and give you 1 hour to pack up to go out of state for two weeks in the desert. Oh well I do what I can.

IL - I would also like to hear more about this protein thing. I am not currently eating any bars but get them when I am on the road. I may stick to a cooler and sandwiches.

Cheers,
Scotsman

Info on shelf life would be interesting if you have any...

Well I hate looking and cuting and pasting studies, b/c it is a waste of my time (and i hate reading through them on the boards b/c 90 percent of the time they are flawed and or have nothing to do with the original point)

So here is how I understand it:

Denaturing is when a protein is subject to intense heat or acids that change the jumbled structure to a flat structure. Once this happens the protein loses its Biological Value, so even though it is digested it is just pissed out. Most supplements that are in bar form or premixed shake form have been pastuerized and heated to kill bacteria at the same time ruining the proteins.

This is documented if you want to look for studies....my own personal experience is that the only supps I will use is protein powders and water or milk. I know that a payday is about as healthy as a balance bar.....so if you are in a hurry drink some milk take some liquid aminos and have a snickers or two

Interesting point. I might make some enquiries with some contacts at a sup company to see what their thinking is about the pasteurisation process...

Does that go for pretty much all processed foods? So the only real sources of proteins are real meat (chicken, beef, pork, fish from grocery store or restaurant), milk, and protein powders?

imo yes, the less proccessing a food source goes through the better it is for you....like for example lunchmeat....not a good source of protein....hamburger and steak is a good source

isn't pasteurization heat low, less than boiling? It takes a lot of heat to denature protein (look at cooketd meat for instance).

Im glad you brought that up IL. Im going to research it later and see if I can figure it out.

Im not expecting you to answer these, I will research it on my own, but these are the questions I have.

All dairy foods are processed, Milk, Cottage cheese, cheese, yogurt, etc. Does that mean that none of the store bought products are any good?

All meat I eat is cooked with high heat. Does that do the same thing to the protien in them? Should I eat my meat as raw as I can handle it?

Im sure more will come up as I research it.

I will try to post all of my findings for everyone to look at.
