my office christmas party was last night and we all got our bonuses.

the way it works is everyone starts with the same amount (from physicists to the assemblers) and the managers are given an extra amount to divide up amoung their department whatever way they feel is appropriate.

So i'm friendly with 3 people in my department that have equivalent positions to me. after we got our checks, 2 of them (both technical writers) come over to me smiling. they're really happy about their check amount and told me they both got $1900. I open mine and it's $1155.

oh. ok, i think. i haven't quite been there a year. i think i'm only eligable for 75% of the bonus, which sucks because i've been there 11 months. But still, i'm happy and i'm thinking that my boss had no control over me getting less.

then i remembered that those two did a special project that involved 100 hours of overtime that they didn't get compensated for, and our boss told them they'd get extra in their christmas bonus. so that's cool.

later, i was on my way home and my other friend (and office mate) texted me and asked how much was my bonus. hers was $555. which means, that's probably what the minimum was, and my boss actually doubled mine.

its not the money that made me feel so good- it's the fact that I worked hard this year, and got recognized for it. :)

congrats, but sharing bonus #s typically creates disharmony, I would tell people it was "good" or "just enough" in the future.

I'm self employed.

ok. . .you're self employed. . .wanna create a little windfall of cash for yourself around the holidays??

i'm a self-employed cpa. . .i'll spend a couple of days next week putting together bills for work that i've done over the last month or so, then i'll send them out on 12/21. . .everyone of them will be paid on or before 12/31. . .because my clients want to make sure that they get that final deduction for the year FOR THEIR TAX RETURNS. . .and the beauty of it is that most of their checks won't get to me in the mail until after 01/01. . .so. . .they get a deduction for the 2007 tax year and most of the income doesn't go on my return until 2008 :)

In my bondng business, it's 99% cash, I do creative accounting through the year. In my other business, I get rebate checks for the product amounts, the checks are pretty sizeable, that's kind of a "bonus" of sorts...

i don't discuss my salary actually. but i wanted to know about how this bonus thing works and i assumed we'd all get the same amount. I'm the newest person in the department, so if anyone was going to get a smaller amount, i just figured it would be me.

i knew how much everyone got last year, and they all got the same amount.

thats cool. i got a hat, t-shirt and company fleece at out x-mas party yesterday. The only bad thing is that I didn't win any of the 25 raffle prizes. they gave away some nice gifts.

or salary

Well that's because you're a classy person.. and it's sort of not really the most tactful thing to do (in most situations).. but if everyone in your office is discussing it.. then that's sort of a scary thought.. maybe they are just that close of a group of people..

I wouldn't even discuss my bonus if I worked with my best friends...

still you must be pretty socially gifted having everyone so openly coming up to you wanting to tell you about their christmas bonus.

I think employees should discuss these things among eachother.

Employers know that people dont talk about it so they are more comfy with giving less because discussing it is taboo!

Bragging is one thing, which should be taboo, but how could you ever know you are getting what you deserve?

I got a nice bonus also (in Oct), but yes, the men I work with still get more than the women, That's because it's still a family owned biz and the old man who owns the co. still thinks women need less money b/c their husbands support them.
Imagine, the co made over 100 million last yr and is a public company and can still be run this way..........funny!

Feels great huh? Good for you! Last week I got paid and my check was $1200 more than usual. I thought it was a mistake, but my boss said no mistake I am an awesome employee and it was a holiday bonus. Makes you feel like you must be doing something right ;)

I got $3,100 this year and most of it is already spent. We also get profit sharing in January. Last year I got $8,500 so I'm hoping for $10K at least.

that's awesome.
we are growing fast, but our profit sharing isn't nearly that high.
