rebuilding, getting there

Both my tablet and desktops are crashed out right now. I have a video card to put into this system as well as a monitor. Is this worth the $350 he's asking? The bottom of the ad on craigslist says the price is negotiable... what should I offer?

yes
$300

There's no mention of a case either...pretty much assumed.

I'd just go to costco and buy a new one for $400.

The risk is there is no warranty if something breaks and it sounds like this is a home shop throw together.

I'd like to start from teh motherboard up, but this is just in a pinch becuase of having 2 computers fail recently. My desktop has been crankin along since 1999 too, lmao.

The computer in the original post has XP Pro with a COA and restore disk, if that makes any difference.

okay I've got $566 for this deal via newegg. I had to make some assumptions about the processor because I couldnt find the exact one listed. Could someone actually look it up for me? I couldnt figure otu which one of these it was:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116213 Could it just be an overclocked version of this processor?

Don't worry about the K, but here ya go...

 this thing should work real well with my 256mb $60 video card and 15'' CRT monitor from 1999, :lmao: I wish I could fucking sleep right now, just stoked about getting a working computer up and running again. I've got licenses (legal ones) for both the client and server versions of IpSwitchFTPpro I could get set up in one day to get this study transfer working.

Fuck this is awesome.

Well, get this shit running and make some money... lmao. Lemme know if you need help setting it up, or anything else for that matter.

Pentium D's are crap too

you forgot the 1GB RAM, 200GB disk, 16X dvd burner, and XP Pro. That is a steal. A new PC for that price will come with a Celeron/Sempron, 512MB RAM, XP Home and a cd burner at best.

Let me lay some things out for you:

Memory:
Non-overclocking:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231098
overclocking:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220144
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231114

Motherboards:
here's where it really matters if you plan on overclocking...its so easy its almost not worth not overclocking...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131070
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131028
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131025
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138039
(Ibought this last one open box for 51.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138037R

Motherboard selection starts getting pretty indepth... SLI and overclocking in your future? Which chipset will work best with your components? etc

Processor:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115013
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115005
those will easily overclock nearly to their 800$ counterparts

Case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119047
Best lowest price case out there - doesnt feel cheap and wont cut you up.

Powersupply:
this is just an example, 500watts will be plenty for your build if youdont go SLI etc
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182016

Video Card:
Again, depends what you want to do, read this article:
