Is there a big difference between 64 and 128 mb in

a video card? I just ordered one through Gateway and quite frankly got ripped off. lol Should I have opted for the 128? Not really into gaming or anything but if I could get better pic quality I will cough up the extra $$. Also about $100 is what I`m looking for, no $400 stuff like I`ve been seeing. I have an old computer that`s ready to go. 400mhz P2 desktop from 1998 lol

I`ve been having a problem with screen flickering and I was told it could be the video card. any thoughts? While I`m here?

The higher end video cards are all about faster frame rates - you don't need to spend that kind of money for a better picture. Getting a better monitor and a good low end video card will give you a good picture.

If you have someone nearby that could trade monitors, I would switch them out and see if you still have the flickers. If not then you know it's the monitor. If it still flickers, try and trade video cards. Other than that I would say UPGRADE

It`s not the monitor becuase it not the whole screen flickering. It`s certain parts of the webpages like the scrollbar would turn black and I can`t use it, So when I scroll down the page depressing my mouse, I get a waterfall effect of the images on the screen and also, the words on the screen superimpose themselves on each other.

Gateway says I most likely have to reinstall Windows (98) but I don`t want to back up 6 years of files and stuff so I`m trying the video card they suggested first.

Just pick up a cheap AGP card. It will probably be better than what you have in there right now. You might also try re-installing the latest video drivers for the card you have in there now.

Oh, man, don't say you don't have that stuff backed up. They can HEAR it when you say that, and that's when the disk says "Be seein' ya!"

All that video RAM is about textures for gamers, not for a higher quality desktop. What you're describing sounds like a driver issue... maybe a little bit-rot in the driver, or more likely something new got a little overzealous and installed over something you'd rather have kept. Try getting a fresh copy of the video driver from whoever made your old card, if they're still in business. (I can't believe 3DFX went belly up....)

P2 400MHz is not a bad little box. Hell, if you put a decent OS on it you could use it for a server. It's the Gatesware that makes you think it's slow.

Actually it has more to do with texture storage than frame rates

If you play video games with A LOT of texturing overlays (like UT2004) then you want as much as possible... even 256MB if you can get it..

but for older games or low end stuff... you wont see a difference.

Yes I have a 16mb one in there now I think, not sure. No big deal I guess. but I did re-install the video driver (upgraded) upon recommendation. I also just virus scanned the whole computer... nothing there. I updated all Windows (98) stuff. I regularly defragment and disc clean my computer. I also have a cookie and cache washer and bleacher, Whatever that means... that I run all the time.

I was also told the system resoruces might be running low. I was using about %50 of them until I deleted stuff running at startup. that bought it up to about %62 percent... not sure exactly.

They may be right about it being a software issue, but I`m dreading redoing Windows. My whole life is on this computer and don`t want to risk not backing it up correctly and replacing the files and favorite places(saved websites and webpages etc.) and all the stuff I downloaded over the years.

Is there any other way than doing windows over again?

Well, buy a new card and try it out. If it doesn't work, bring the card back.

I'd start backing all of your stuff up on the computer... It's gonna die sooner or later...

LOL ant missJanet, Yes I plan on getting a new PC after I finish building my basement office room, maybe I`ll get a laptop. I have a lifetime warranty with Gateway that`s why I`m keeping this for now.

Your files don't have a lifetime warranty... Back 'em up now or you'll be crying sooner or later. :)

:qt: ;) I hear you... I still have my old Dell ('98), but it's in GREAT condition 'cause I maintained it. I upgraded everything. It's a good machine - I keep it 'cause it has alot of stuff on it that I don't want to transfer to my laptop. I leave it there for my lil' nephew to use when he's over. But I know how it is to want to hold onto it. Good luck!

Anything greater than 8MB is fine if you're not a gamer, but there's really no reason to go with less than 64MB these days.

alienware is essentially a bad ass case filled with quality parts that are marked up like a mofo. you can build an alienware quality system for much much less except that you won't have the neato case to go along with it. however if i was a bazillionaire i'd pick one up in a heartbeat.

You need to move that Fan or dildo away from the monitor..
Sounds like interference from the motor to me..

Windows 98? You need to upgrade that OS bad. Really you need a new computer. I wouldn't put any more money into upgrading anything with a system that old. Spend $300 and you could get an off market PC that'll be around 2ghz and much much better than what you are using. Backing files sucks but it'll should be done regardless. As far a getting another computer, it's time man. Seriously.

Why? If all the dude does is surf, email and other low cpu stress kinda things.... Why spend the $ on a new system?

Yeah all I do is surf really. I just started storing pics from my camera about a year ago. That`s all I do. I love it with DSL. I upgraded from a 128 to (bought 2 more 128`s) 384 add ons and a DVD add on in the past.

I know I`ll buy the $2 -$ 3 k PC when I upgrade, so I`m not in a big hurry. I actually am thinking of the media PC`s with an LCD TV for watching TV and surfing with. Not sure exactly what I`m getting yet, but I know the prices are dropping and new tech (that I want ) is coming out every day so waiting is`nt too bad. If it was`nt for this flickering issue I would`nt have a problem.

One more question, Whenever I sign on to EF and the platinum chat goes up and I close it out, That`s when the screen goes crazy and starts flickering certain parts of the page and scrollbar and superimposing letters on each other. When an Instant message screen pops up I get that. Sometimes when I stop using the IM, the problem comes a few minutes later. Is that a windows software issue?

Platinum chat is Java based.... Do you use that chat feature of EF?

From what you are describing, it just sounds like windows is starting it's death rattle of instability. It ain't gonna get better. You've had this OS install for 6 years now. There is a bukkake load of goo on that hard drive. It will need a clean install sooner or later. Probably sooner.

Yes the chat from EF does it to the screen almost every time. It might not do it right away, sometimes after a little while. Also when I sign on to EF and the Plat chat opens up automatically and I shut it down BEFORE it loads up all the way, It does it instantly or even goes to an error message.

When you say "will need a clean install" is that reinstalling Windows 98 disk that we mentioned earlier?

oh shit. I just read the firefox webpage and it says something about spyware not being run on it. I have (uh oh) gater Ewallet spyware program on my computer. I use it dozens of times a day so getting rid of it would really be a hardship. Can I still install firefox?

I know about how bad spyware can be. lol I actually don`t know the EXACT reasons but everyone tells me to get rid of it. lol But I fill out so many forms and paswords and usernames a day. it would be impossible to even straighten all that stuff out. I don`t even know half the user names and passwords I have if it were`nt for that program.

Yeah, go ahead an install it - your Ewallet thing just won't work with firefox. Firefox will remember passwords and usernames for you, if you let it, just like that spyware trash you are using now. :)

Wow I installed it and I`m using it now. It`s not as fluid while scrolling as the other software I had but it`s working fine. Thanks.

I set it as my "default browser" but I still have to open it and search from the page itself, Is that how it works? Also, do I have to uninstall windows now? or just leave it and not use it?

anyway, so far so good.

Another question. lol I have an Accelerater software to speed up webpage loading and stuff. I like it, seems to work. Would it work with this program if I don`t do anything? or do I have to reinstall it "inside" this browser or something. Yes I have no idea what I`m doing. lol I installed it months ago and it`s always been running and never touch it.

I ask this because the pages don`t seem to load as fast as previous, could that be it?

You can't uninstall Internet Explorer - it's integral to the OS.

Try out firefox for a few days and see if it works for you. If it doesn't, I'd recommend reinstalling Win98, or whatever it is that was on the machine.

Did you backup your files yet?

I have`nt backed up my files. I`ve asked enough questions for one night. I don`t wanna burn you out. lol I`ll save it for another day.

When I log on to AOL, do I just minimize the window and click on the firefox from my desktop to start running things? That`s what I`m doing now, Is that how it`s done, even if I chose it for default browser?

He's talking about spending $100 on a video card. That's a waste IMO. He's computer is too slow and probably doesn't have enough memory to to fully utilize a $100 video card. It's kinda like nice rims on a hoopty.
