Is the magnetic strip on credit cards reprogramable? What information is on it? Has anyone hacked into the strip?

yes it is. i saw a show about it on techtv's cybercrime. there are machines that will reprogram information on it. I remember seeing some people that were featured on that show. they had used Hotel key cards to put stolen credit card information. you may be able to find some info on it at techtv.com and then go to cybercrime under television shows

Interesting,...... I read the article that said people were using card swipers to copy the code from cards.

....... how the hell do they reprogram an existing card to a different number?

Yes they are.
But uness you can flash another CC# into it, you can't add money to it, that info does not reside on the stripe. Doing this pretty dumb, since the number embossed on the card will not match (not that anyone checks this).

Each stripe has an ATR (the card's way of saying hello to the reader) and your account number and the issuing banks FedWire transfer #s.

It is relatively easy to flash new data to the card, but you'd need to get valid CC#s and FedWire #s to make it work. Each bank has a different FedWire # and each card company has a different ATR.
