Hi all...I was away at work for the past 10 days but I'm back for a few days now and decided I would begin with a little rant 
Let me begin...
Recently I took a defensive driving course and it involved a series of videos (Old 1980's cartoons). The main character was a man, and he would get in auto mishaps, and the narrator would explain what should have been done in that type of situation...Finally a scene came where a woman was the main character, and guess what her auto accident involved? It was a scene where she was in a grocery store pushing a grocery cart around, and came to an "intersection" where four grocery carts collided. Pretty ignorant wouldn't you say? Pathetic, sexist, right? Old fashioned...that is how society was...
Canada recently came out with a new 10 dollar bill and on the back of it are three soldiers, two of which are women (And the third is not very visible and could be interpreted as either a man or a woman), despite the fact that under 15% of soldiers in Canada are women. Then I went to GoArmy.com , which is the US army home page, only to find that the ads were filled with women, people of all races, old / ugly people, people with mustaches or bad hair...a fit healthy white man was a minority in every page I saw it seemed. In fact, to find a handsome, fit white male was practically non - existant. I noted something similar whenever I also walked by numerous "Now hiring" posters, and in all cases, the only white men in the posters were old / fat. I had not seen a single healthy white man in any of the posters.
I'm also reminded of a poster of three fire fighters holding the American flag, circa September 11 - Three white firefighters and the problems that were caused by that, and how it was to be changed to show the 3 firefighters as one white man, one black man, and one hispanic man, when to racially balance the picture (in accordance with the racial breakdown of the NY firefighting team), you would have to include 37 white men, one black man, and one hispanic man
Anyway, what this post is getting at is: We used to live in a society of sexism and rascism, looking back, society seemed pretty pathetic and ignorant. Now, we are overcompensating to make up for what happened in the past and to make society better in the future, and to me, that is equally as pathetic and ignorant. We're in a transitional phase as a society and I know this is a short term thing, but still, I have a feeling 10 years from now people are going to look at these types of things and find them pretty stupid.
