Is "singularity" a possibility?

Arent several movies about how machines learned and therefore tried to kill off the human race?

just think, once this happens we won't have to work or do anything. We could just sit at home and jerkoff while our "machine analog" goes to work for us. I dunno. If it opened the door to human creativity.......fine. But it very well could stifle it. I don't see any benefits to the human soul for this happening.

Dammit, I thought this was a physics thread.

Me too when I read the title. If the thought of discussing physics on a steroids board got me a little excited, does that make me a dork? :p

Hello. You must be relatively new around these parts.

singularities are well studied in mathematics, close to my heart.

samoth u a physicist? u are an applied mathmatician with a few more liberties...lol.

should of known by your boundary comment. i always meant to comment about it.

Physics major.

Singularities can be easy in mathematics... not so much so in physics. Nothing like haveing the liberty to define a problem as undefined and saying it's solved, lol.

i fuckin KNEW samote was gonna be all over this shit

especially removable singularities.

BS & MS in applied & pure math Purdue baby!

u got start some more physics/math threads. i got all excited like i just got a package in the mail.

Yeah, I've been really slacking.

What are/were your interests in your field?

damn MS in pure math from Purdue! Genius alert!

real analysis. one of the specific problems deals with ideal (maximal coverage) placement of N number of points in 3-dimensions. this specifically applies to satelites in orbit. the solution has been proven for N =1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 I believe. I am not so sure about the case N=4. The general solution is obviously still unknown.

I also liked to model biological functions and static processes using differential equations (this should be near and dear to you).

I secretly loved number theory specifically prime numbers and algorithms related to computer encryption (RSA). But I was steered away from this by advisors as it was not glamourous enough or conducive to a good career in mathematics. Which really didnt end up mattering anyways. I should of done my PhD.

Unfortunately I am stuck mostly doing statistics at work. I do teach part time at a local university but since I dont have my PhD I am limited to undergraduates and stuff of no real interest to my specialties.
