Is Pasta(spageti Etc) a very good carb for cutting..karma for anwsers

A few suggestions for lowering the GI on pasta:

3. Eat it with protien and fat.. this will lower the GI more than you can imagine. For example: look at the GI on peanuts.. the reason for the low GI: FAT. GI gets thrown out the window when you have protien and fat with the carbs..

I agree with 1 and 2, but while 3 is true from a Glycemic Index standpoint, I don't think eating a high carb meal with a lot of fat is very smart while trying to cut. That is the equivalent of eating pizza and chicken breast. While eating the chicken breast does help the macronutritional ratios, there are better choices.

Agreed - it just depends on your diet needs. Some people are on CKD diets and the fat wouldn't hurt at all during a carb up day.

Also - some fat in your diet is required. If you aren't getting ANY fat your are doing your self a dis-service. So if you have no fat as it is adding a tablespoon or two of good fat like Canola to the pasta along with some tomato sauce and some LowFat ground beef or chicken make a good meal - and makes the GI of the pasta mean absolutley nothing.

Again it all depends on your needs. It is just so unlikley to eat pasta by itself - that is why I find the GI index very misleading at least when it comes to non-diabetics.

oh.. I'll add a 4th way to lower the effective GI:

4. take some R-ALA from AF.

(Macro / Ulter.. I'll take that karma anytime you are ready)

Not too be a prick....but then how come you didn't know that pasta has a low g.i.?

WM

actually, pasta is not as low as the abovementioned figures.

its glycemic value is no lower than 50 and up to 80. thats not low!

low glycemic foods are most green veggies, most beans, lentils, whose value is under 35.

White pasta runs about 46 on the GI index and 40 in the insulin index; brown pasta runs 68 on the GI index and 40 on the insulin index.
The GI list I have lists 100% semolina pasta as 52 and whole wheat pasta as 47. There are differences between brands and the processing used. It's sad that many list are quite vague in regard to the brand tested.

My guess would be that those reading were based on dry, uncooked pasta...

yet another reason the GI index is so very misleading.

Pasta is not recommended when fat loss/muscle maintenance is the goal.

In fact, carbohydrates in general can be totally avoided to achieve the greatest results (Other than fibrous vegetables).

If you MUST consume carbs, then oatmeal, rice or barley will do the job much better that pasta, bread or potatoes.

I agree. I think the insulin index value is more important though. I wonder if there's disagreements between IIs out there.
