Is it OK to get most of your protein from shakes and powders?

I'm talking like 75-90% I'm trying to eat 350 grams a day of protein and eating 4-6 chicken breasts, 3 cups of cottage cheese, and 3 fish fillets every day (or the equivalent) for example is just a ton of food. Does anyone see a reason why I can't simply eat a meal that is more "normal"-sized and down a quick protein shake at the end of my meal? It would be much easier to do this 5-6 times a day than keep a stock of chicken breasts cooked and ready to go all the time. Thoughts? Please help with your opinions, because I really need help with diet.

I would presume that because of the increased insulin activity that usually accompanies shakes versus whole foods, in general, that it would bring on hungry more often. Some people have mentioned that lower insulin levels while dieting correlate with less muscle loss.

About the GI of the shakes: I don't have any GI charts to back this up, but am base it on the fact that Chicken breasts keep me full much longer than shakes. Also, with shakes, it is much easier to eat many more calories in one sitting.

Shakes should be only used as supplements

supplement to whole food

You won't find
* fiber
* natural vitamins
* phyto-nutrients
* other enzymes
in powders

Bullshit. I dont see any reason why you cant eat a meal and than have a shake right after w/ out compromising gains. As long as your still getting in some whole food protein you will be fine. Or just stagger your meals so that meal one is solid meal two is a shake meal three is solid and meal four is a shake and follow that throughout the whole day.

Many believe having a drink of whey w/ a meal increases the overall absorption of that meal because of the fast uoptake of the aminos in whey. Either way, you wont be hurting yourself but 350 grams a day really isnt that much. Im surprised your having that much trouble w/ it, is your carbs/fats/overall cals very high?

Shakes are typically whey. Whey stays in your system about two hours. The idea is to have a steady stream of aminos throughout the day, with shakes you will have to consume one every two hours. With casein protein, it can last up to four hours. If you elect to go to mostly shakes, you also risk not getting the fiber you need. Not that you can't drink a shake every two hours and have some metamusil, but food is better.

Im big on protein shakes as I cant stomach too much solid food I consume anywhere from 15-20 scoops of whey (22gms per scoop) on avg a day as well as solid meals..

A typical day for me is

Meal 1 oatmeal, 3-4 scoops whey, 1 tsp peanut butter
Meal 2 4 scoops whey and about 1 tsp of flax (4gms or so of fat)
Meal 3 chicken breasts or tuna and or egss, etc etc..basically another solid meal with some carbs too
Meal 4 (pre workout) 4 scoops why plus a power bar harvest bar
Meal 5 (post workout) 4-5 scoops of why and 30-40gms of maltodextrin
Meal 6 (night time) usually 1-2 chicken breasts or some egg whites or some turkey breast from the deli

I supplement with fiber supps and digestive enzymes too..if you have no other choice and have to consume lots of shakes, then so be it..its fine..unless you are a few weeks out of a show you don’t want all that stuff…real food is the best that close to a show.
