Is it legal to possess steroids in the UK?

I have heard two conflicting views on this. What I do know is tat anabolic steroids are classified as Class C drugs in the UK.

Where the confusion lies is whether or not is is actually illegal or not to possess them in the UK. One view I heave heard say yes it is, and a maximum sentence of 2 years plus a fine can be levied. The other view states that they are a special category of Class C drug, and as long as you do not possess a large enough quantity to be deemed as intent to supply, it is infact not an offence to have them.

So which is it? Hope you can help on this one peeps, thanks!

Anabolic steroids are Prescription Only drugs under the Medicines Act. They can only be sold by a pharmacist on the presentation of a doctor's prescription. Anabolic steroids are also class C drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act. It is not an offence to possess anabolic steroids for personal use, unless they are counterfeit. It is an offence to supply them. Therefore police tend to arrest for steroid possession only if they can prove the drugs are counterfeit (and therefore not prescribed by a doctor). A small number of arrests and convictions are made on this basis each year.

So are you saying that if they were to be purchases without a medical certificate, i.e. from an on-line source, that it is possible to be arrested for it?

No you can not sell (i.e. not over the counter) but you can posess a personal amount for personal consumption. Where you buy them is irrelevant to the law in UK. If you are selling them then obviously that is different.

In America, you get arrested for saying the word "steroid" or words associated with it. I live here only 6 months out of the year and I can't stand it.

Call me dumb but why the hell would it be an offence tp carry couterfeits?I thaught carrying the real deal would be more severe.

because REAL AAS are covered under the Medicines Act. Fakes are not obviously and the danger they could offer as they are not regulated and then comes under any counterfit law (i.e. fake named clothes / watches etc)
