Is it Illegal to Paint your Car like a Cop Car?

It is a free country right? Well could you paint your car like a cop car as long you didn't try to impersonate(pull over anybody) an officer?

It would be cool you would cars getting out of your way. You could slow down traffic by going 10 mph because everybody would be scared to pass you. Well?
 
a lot of those old people driving crown victorias with the little soptlight on the side there look like cop cars anyway....go for it
 
I drove a 96 Impala for four years, and it was really fun at times to come flying up behind someone, and watch them slow down.

Then you realize the impact of that tactic when you're in a group of cars, and you get trapped behind a bunch of yahoos going 10 miles under the speed limit, and it's not quite so much fun.
 
Here's on that will really bake your noodle...

What if you painted your car like the General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard...would the cops always be chasing you...I mean it would'nt matter because you would have a cool horn and you could jump over stuff...but would they?
 
my long term road trip car is a white mercury grand marquis with tinted windows; the twin of the crown vics used by most police departments. as theproject mentioned, peeps come flying up on me and suddenly slow down and pace me until they realize who i am not. when i run up on some LLB (Left Lane Bandit) blocking the fast lane, a flash of my headlights usually gets instant reaction when they see the shape of this car in their rear view mirrors.

i suspect the shape of my car has lt me sail thru some radar traps that shudda nailed me for 20 over the speed limit. :)
 
what about just making it black and white and painting some big numbers on it...nothing illegal about that right?

Those are old cop cars sold at auction and repainted
 
Go all out curling! Impersonating a cop is a felony! But what do you care! Try it! Do it! I bet the African American Chang gang bros would love your fresh ass for some good old fashioned prison butt love!

I always get irritated by people who drive cars that look like a cop's car. I think they have a desire to be a cop so they can have power over people. I'd run you off the road when I discovered that you were not a cop.
 
In NY state you can have a blue light on your car - but not permanently - it has to be the kind you put up on the dash or magnetic dealio to the roof.
The volunteer fire fighters and ambulance peeps use them.

As for a car like the General Lee - I am going to do that when I'm really rich - to a brand new Bentley. Weld the doors shut, paint the thing up and get the cool horn.
Chicks will be on my jock like flies on bacon. And I'll be like, sorry ladies, I'm taken.
Then I'll slam the horn, and floor it in reverse and knock over some garbage cans and then flash them a look of "oops" as I put my hand to my face in an attempt to hide my devilish grin.

In regards to your question: "...could you paint your car like a cop car as long as you don't try to impersonate (pull over anybody) an officer?" The answer is most certainly, no.

It is illegal in, I believe all states, to impersonate an officer. By 'striping' your car, you're impersonating. Meaning, you're wishing to give the appearance of a certified police officer to the general public; that is illegal. The penalties will change from state to state, but if I were you I would not try it.

a kid I used to work with bought a cop car at an auction and the cops were always harrassing him, they used to follow him into the company parking lot and write him tickets for all kinds of bs
