Is anyone familiar with Rolfing?

It's a kind of massage, supposedly pretty intense that focuses on loosening the tissue around your muscle. It would be like massage for the silver tissue around a pork tenderloin. My posture isn't the best, my chest pulls my shoulders forward and the girl that gives me massages says my back is over developed which is also pushing them forward. I'm constsntly having knots in my neck and shoulders and she says this is why and rolfing would most likely help. I just don't know anyone that's done it and if it's helpful, and I'd like to know before dropping a few hundred on these sessions. Plus, the chick that does the rolfing is ugly.

Man, I jokingly said that to the girl that takes care of me and the air in the room got colder than a witch's tit. She knows my sense of humor too. The next week I went to appologize and she told me that after that show came out there was this huge influx of business with guys thinking that was the norm.

Could be vomit. I was expecting a dozen "Yeah, I rolfed up about 60 Jager and tequilla shots last night" replies.

yeah it sounds like it could be something to do with puke and sex in one, like a new dirty word

Yes, rolfing is intense. How intense? Once you are rolfed, you are rolfed for life. Whether you have problems or not, you should have it done anyway.

It is not cheap at all. It is about $200 per session and you need 10-12 sessions for complete treatment. You go once a week. That is all you can handle. The sessions last 45-70 minutes, depending.

If you can find a school nearby that teaches rolfing for students to get certified, you can go there and save some money on the treatments. I think it is something like 40-45 dollars. Just because it is students, you don't have to worry. Because the instructor is there doing most of the work anyway.

You can also see if your doctor will give you a script for rolfing sessions. (or maybe even a chiropractor can.) This will help you bill your insurance company for the treatment.

Just to give you an example of what it is like, I was on a very low table, much lower than massage therapist have theirs, I had a 200 pound man over me with his knee completely ground into my elbow and forearm (to pin that side of me down), while he took HIS elbow and using all his bodyweight, pushed it straight down into my chest muscle at the sternum and slowwlllllllllyyyyyyyyyy pushed his way across the muscle in the directions the muscle fibers were running. It took about 90 seconds for him to go from sternum to armpit. Then he moved down and started on a new path in the chest.

I have not had the entire treatment (10 sessions) but one day when I am positive I can go on the same day each week without interupting it for my work travels, I am going to get it all done.

Some people compare the feeling after being rolfed as a being reborn all over again.

lol! sounds delightful. I've heard about it and its supposed to hurt like a mofo. To the point where you're almost in tears.. hahaha. But if it straightens you out... go for it brothah!

Hurt is not the word to use. It is like the top notch version of S&M you pay to have done to you.

Rolfing is only about 30% directed at the muscles. It is basically pulling the tendons and ligaments up to relay them in their proper paths. Rolfing basically moves in the direction of inside out. You start deep and that is going to require some real digging in areas like your quads and back.

hmmm......

I need that to break up some of the mass on my outter quad areas

I go to a hot chick for a massage and she actually knows what she is doing. I lay done butt naked and usually get a hard on which I think turns her on cause she trys to provoke it. Too bad she never actually massages my cock.

The degree of pain is really an individual thing. It depends on your muscle size (the more they have to manipulate through) and how tight the fascia is surrounding the muscle. Tight = pain.

If you are flexible and have good mobility, it is not that painful.

I think I'll go ahead and do this, but AAP has managed to scare the hell out of me. Vert helpful though. Thanks.

Is this like ART? I have had extensive experience with ART and it is a god send. some people think it is very painful - it can defintiely be, as it is used to break up scar tissue in an intense manner. I would walk out of there with stretch marks and red marks all over my bicep and shoulder.

I'm fucking jacked though, so it didn't matter.

Monday retardedness caused me to take until the third time I read that to have it sink in. Har dee har.

I am not trying to scare anyone with it. But this is not a "massage". You don't go in with candle light and Muzak or whatever. You don't fall asleep on the table.

They are literally pulling your tendons off the bones and remapping your body the way it is suppose to be. The level of pain depends on many factors. It can be a minor discomfort or complete agony.

It depends on :

Muscle size - the bigger you are, obviously the more digging they have to do.

Your flexibility - the more limber and flexible you are the better. "Muscle bound" guys will have a bit more pain as the tendons and ligaments are handled and the muscles have fiber stripping.

Your fascia- the tighter the fascia, the more difficult it is to manipulate it and get beneath it.

Any injuries - if you hurt before you go in, it will be intensified. A good rule of thumb is to take about 10 days off from the gym before you go for the first session. The first session is worst (best) because you are not expecting what it is like and so forth. You don't want tight or sore muscles. Afterwards when you get the treatment plans, you can workout while knowing in advance what the next session is going to target.

I have not been for the entire thing. I would love to. The way I was exposed to it was this rolfer was chatting with me before and immediately, he asked me if I was a swimmer. I swam competively for many years, all through high school and college. I asked him how he knew and he told me he could read my body. It appears that all swimmers have over developed shoulders and lats (I did), which although not as severe as gymnasts, it still causes the front torso, mainly the chest to be pulled in slightly. He said that I had did a good job of bringing it back out through training and stretching (shit, I just wanted to get bigger) and he told me that he could help me open it back up. So I said sure and went for that one session.

The next day, when I woke up, was I bigger? No. Was I sore and hurting? No. Was I dramatically reborn? No. I couldn't really tell anything until a few days later I realized that I was walking in a more natural position. My posture had really improved to the point that I didn't have to subconsciously will myself to stand up straight (remember your mother telling you that?)
I did notice a more natural movement in chest exercises at the gym as well.

Overall, if I had the time to commit to every single session within 7 days of each other, I would do it. But you may not exactly need for them to be 7 days apart, you may be able to do it every 3, it all depends on your make up. Just see a rolfer for a consultation.
