Is a NASCAR driver considered an athlete?

Freakmonster are you in Atlanta?

They were talking about this on the radio this morning, but the issue wasn't are Nascar drivers athletes, it was, is Nascar a sport?

NASCAR is a sport.

NASCAR drivers aren't athletes (necessarily).

BTW I have no interest in NASCAR one way or the other.

how about jockeys or horses for that matter.....greyhounds? Bodybuilders?

by pure definition of the word alone, greyhounds and horses are not athletes. An athlete refers to a Person. Race car drivers are not athletes. Nascar is a competitive event - I guess it could be considered a sport, not an athletic contest.

I agree that by the defintion you are right, horses are not athletes. But I think ESPN would disagree. They named Secretariat 35th in the top 50 ATHLETES of all time.

I believe they are athletes,Hell I remember seeing some of the big guys out there today up here when I was very young running on tracks like cayuga, and they said it takes a hell of alot to operate those cars for the times they do

Did ESPN have any race car drivers on the list? I don't remember. But, if they are looking at the most dominating athletes and performances and open the consideration to animals, it makes sense to include secretariat.

I wonder what batch of glue that horse ended up in.
