IMO race car drivers are not athletes. While it does require the skills of the driver, it is not an athletic competition. It's a fucking guy driving a car. (or truck I guess)

Long debated..

I feel they are unique as the sport requires long term exposure to extreme heat and tension, rather than huge strength or cardio endurance as most people think of athletes.

The inside of these cars can reach 100+ degrees easy and stay there for 2-3 hours.
Shifting gears for hours on the short or road tracks can also be
hard
