HELLO ALL: Does 5-HTP really works?? I've been reading lately about the wonder effects of serotonin-increasing power of 5-HTP does it really works as they claim? Is it a good alternative to serotonergics like Prozac/Zoloft??
Or is it just another placebo supplement like Dibencozide (Co-Enzyme b-12) years ago??
Can someone here explain to me or talk about 5-HTP??
Thanx all have a nice day

see u later

try it out for two weeks or so pick up a bottle at your local nutrition store they sell for around 13 dollars to about twenty depending witch brand.....remeber everyone is different what works for someone may not guarantee it will work for you just dont get so hyped up when someone has good results because if it dont work for you then you get disapointed....if i hear good thing about a product i will go out and try it out(if i have a few extra beans though:( ) then if it doesnt do shit for me then oh well buisness as usual

dissapointed about most supplements

Howa re you? Well the thing is that I've been sort of dissapointed about most supplements for mental health, most herbs and over the counter commercial products.
That's why people go to Doctors to get real medicines that works for them, becuase I've noticed that commercial products are not so effective really as advertising claims.
That's why depressed people try prozac/zoloft instead of St. Johns Wort or natural herbs because herbs do not work strong and fast, and even amino acids do not get right to the heart of the matter.
I will just stick to my afternoon walks to increase moods and go to a doctor to get a good prescription medicine for depression ;-)

Thanx all

Tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) through hydroxylation at the 5-carbon by a mixed function oxygenase. 5-HTP is then converted to serotonin by decarboxylation by a pyridoxal 5-phosphate-dependant enzyme. Therefore, on paper, 5-HTP looks effective at increasing serotonin levels. However, and this is where the marketing of 5-HTP comes in as a sleep inducer, serotonin can also be methylated and acetylated into Melatonin in the pineal glands, etc. Melatonin, can for some, make them sleepy. However, from a few reports of some of 5-HTP's users, to induce the melatonin, sleepiness effects, you have to take a high dosage. This probably varies between individuals, and I am not sure if one were to use SSRI's then they "might" even need a lower dosage since less serotonin will be used for reuptake (not sure on this). Maybe someone else can comment on this, and if i am wrong, then maybe they can correct me.

Just take the real deal. Take tryptophan. they may not sale it at GNC, but you can find it on biochemical.com
as far as moods go with tryp and 5-htp sure some, but as the rock says" no your role". I would use it more as a sleep aid.

New Study!

The most recent study on 5HTP is actually based on a native tribe that constantly chewed on the Griffonia bean, the main source used in most 5HTP formulas. The whole tribe was found to have major problems with the left ventricle of the heart and this was attributed to Griffonia. I will try and dig it out for you fellas. Remember though, most formulas use a small % of the bean, so heart problems may only occur in really high dosages.

Took up to 200mg 1 hour before bed... Didn't do anything at all to induce sleep. It's very expensive... and if it doesn't work at that dose, don't know at what dose it would.
