Damascus, Syria -- Kamal's overstuffed backpack is filled with extra pairs of socks, jeans, perfume, hairbrush and a towel.
Dressed casually in jeans, a T-shirt and combat boots, the 34-year-old former Sudanese soldier is one of hundreds of men wandering daily around Damascus waiting to secure transport into Iraq.
"I am not going because I am a Muslim, I am going because a so-called superpower has no right to bomb and kill to tell other people how to live their lives," he said in broken English from behind a pair of mirrored sunglasses.
"I'm going to do whatever I can to stick their superior power right back up their asses."
Kamal says he's never undertaken a trip like this before, and his family back home on the outskirts of Khartoum refused to give their blessing. But his enthusiasm will make him popular on the streets of Damascus, whose residents are overwhelmingly opposed to the war.
"When I called my brothers yesterday, they told me to get this tribal mind- set out of my head," Kamal added, fingering his passport, freshly stamped with an Iraqi visa. "But I have to follow my heart, and they should be following me. "
