Interesting workout to look like a "300" King

What is your opinion of this workout to look like the guys in the new movie "300" which they were all built and ripped, and a very cool movie

http://www.menshealth.com/cda/artic...item=de42ad5c08450110VgnVCM10000013281eac____

Butler enlisted the help of Mark Twight, a former world-class mountain climber who, based on personal experience, believes in training as if your life depends on it. In fact, Twight would argue that a good workout should make you feel almost queasy upon hearing what lies ahead. For example, to hasten Butler's mind-body transformation, he created what he calls the "300-rep Spartan workout." (Trust us, 100 reps is plenty hard.) (*2) It goes like this: Without resting between exercises, Butler performs 25 pullups, 50 deadlifts with 135 pounds, 50 pushups, 50 jumps on a 24-inch box, 50 floor wipers (*3), 50 single-arm clean-and-presses using a 36-pound kettle bell, and 25 more pullups. All this, in addition to utilizing other unconventional yet equally taxing training methods, such as tire flipping and gymnastics-style ring training. Sound like hell? It is. In fact, upon receiving his marching orders for a Spartan workout, one of Butler's costars told Twight, "It feels like you just killed my dog."

Five weeks before the cameras were to roll, Butler took on extra sessions with a Venezuelan bodybuilder named Franco LiCastro in order to exaggerate the physique he was after. "I wanted to look really strong," says Butler. "I've seen so many actors play these kinds of roles, and you see all this equipment on either a big belly or skinny little arms." It worked in more ways than one: On-screen, the bearded actor lords over the battlefield like testosterone incarnate, with the steely gaze, cobblestone abs, and broad, chiseled shoulders you suspect one would need to command 300 men to their slaughter.

Some crazy stuff he does;

Train For Victory
Start off by doing 100 reps using four to six different exercises, 10 to 25 reps per exercise. Build up from there until you can do 300 without rest. Feel free to swap in exercises such as jumping jacks, dumbbell curls, and Swiss-ball crunches, says Butler's current trainer, Manhattan-based Joe Dowdell, C.S.C.S.

Of course, the downside to an extreme transformation is just that -- it's extreme. Case in point: During production, Butler would often train with Twight, train with LiCastro, and then do his sword-and-shield work for hours on end. As a result, every joint in his 6'2'' body ached by the time he set down his shield for the last time. And at some point along the way, he became overtrained, a state in which the stress of training has surpassed the body's ability to recover fully from it. (*4) As a result, once filming wrapped, Butler stopped working out as abruptly as he'd started. Understandably, his body -- and mind -- needed a break. But the upshot was that his no-holds-barred training regimen turned into an equally hard-to-shake layoff, one that would last 8 months. Neither approach is healthy long term.

You are quite the celebrity fitness afficianado my friend. But first thing's first... Brandon Lee THEN Daniel Craig THEN King Leonitus.

liar. =) You'll be back after gaining those 10lbs looking for help to gain 25 more. You'll see. It's a vicious, never-ending cycle.

Gotta agree with Tweakle.

You always see these guys do blitzkrieg training for 4 months and come out lookign amazing in the film. The camera and lighting does add the illusion of greater size and definition, but they are still built.

Transformations like Butler for Leonidas, Kurt Russell for Soldier, Tobey for Spider-man, Brad Pitt for Fight Club near the end and Will Smith for Ali don't just prove that these guys have access to amazing trainers and food management, but access to steriods and/or other growth enhancing supplements.

Workouts like they were putting the actors threw don't build bodies like that shown in the movie. Sorry, but they don't, and certainly not in 4 months without "assistance". If you notice there was one seen in the movie with Leonidas marching his men along and it was frontal shot capturing him and all his men. Those are not crossfit built bodies. Butler and his core guys(main actors) were upfront with him, but the majority of those 300 men were paid extras that were bodybuilders by hobby or lifestyle.

One of the most obvious signs of steroid usage that I notice are teh traps and are almost always a tell-tale sign. And I don;t mean big traps. I mean the kind that look like they pop out the side of your neck and straight up out of the side of your collar bone. That comes from AAS use. The traps, lats and forearms all have ALOT of receptors and respond dramatically to AAS and hard training.

I've never used AAS, But I did use a prohormone called 1-AD for 5 weeks and trained my ass off and with just that my traps visually looked to have doubled in size with minimal direct trap work. My shoulders swelled up and it physically got painfull from the extreme pump I got from laterals lol. Based off that minor experience andwhat I have seen in the gym for years I know that article was bogus.

Those look like great workouts for your body. But those last 4 weeks were spent bodybuilding hard, some of that crossfit stuff and probably the breakfast of champions(dianabol) or something like Winstrol. Hell I don't know, but that's my guess.

I just hate seeing people duped into thinking you can do that in 4 weeks let alone 4 months without special assistance.

Also, real spartan soldiers would not have been that muscled up. No way. They wore some armor, but that alone being worn for long periods of time would not build bulk muscle mass. For proof you need only look to modern day soldiers who in the field wear quite abit of weight in gear all day and 99% of the time are average in size and build. Soldiers like the spartans were fierce warriors, but all that extra muscle mass isn't gonna help when you march 20 miles a day with armor on and eat 1-2 meals.

Most of the stuff you see in movies is simply movie magic. The reality is not quite so eye candyish.

Just my opinion.

Sounds great, I'll buy the dvd and a cycle of roids and be all good. Now I just need to find a way into the sequal for 300 ....

See, this is what pisses me off. If I lifted like that, way way way high reps I'd wilt and lose strenght and size. I don't get it. ONLY way I get bigger is to eat a shitton and lift heavy with compound exercises. That is it. It sucks, maybe I just have bad genetics.

i thought someone said those guys are airbrushed
When I saw the movie one of the first things I tha struck me was that it looked like they had TONS of makeup on their abs. If you watch, the shadows on their abs don't change much even when they move.

I have no doubt that the guys were in good shape and all, but I am quite sure that if you saw that same actor on the same sday he shot, out of makeup and in real life, he would look a lot less impressive.

BTW if you liked '300' check our 'Sin City', another movie based on a graphic novel and I think it was the same director as '300'....I think I liked it even better.

Sin City was a great movie, I dropped my Marv-atar a while back.

That "workout" basically helped drop weight/fat, which gave them nice abs. Low bodyfat and nice abs make you look more muscular. But most of those guys aren't hulking beasts or anything. Just lean. That's not that difficult to achieve.

Yeah its all from working out and eating right for a couple of months, thats why Stallone got busted with 48 vials of GH here about 2 weeks ago.

going off-topic here (well sort of), is 300 a must-see movie? me and my girl were gonna see it this weekend (I chose it :chomp: ).....but last time I chose, we went and seen ghostrider and that movie was just terrible

I would have loved to see Ronnie Coleman play a part in the persian Army, then nobody would be talking about how good some of them looked. Maybe he could have taken the part of that tall psycho thing the persians had chained, and released on Leonodias.

I dunno, bros, I'm afraid I'd get too big if I did the 300 workout. Anybody have a link to what Daniel Craig did to get diced for Casino Royale? Any word on whether he used The Roid Store?

A lot of those muscles were CGI'ed in the movie, aka special effects. I'm sure the actors had to get in good shape, but please.

That routine isn't going to build big muscle on anyone. It will get you in good cardio/sport shape, but you aren't going to get big muscles doing it. You would look more like Bruce Lee then The Rock.

Suspend reality, and it's a fun movie.

LOL -- I clicked on the link in Al420's post and they have a picture of a guy deadlifting BLINDFOLDED

Not sure what that's supposed to do -- when I go heavy I can't see a damn thing anyway.

175 and shredded at 5'10"? That's bigger than you think. It is certainly larger than those spartans. Bruce Lee was REALLY lean and very dry in his movies. You drop a lot of bodyweight getting that cut.

And also, if you want to look like the dudes in 300, that is totally a realistic goal. It'll take time, but it is more than realistic. The guys in that movie weren't impressive given today's standards. MAybe 2000 years ago.

The purpose would be obvious if you knew anything about advanced training techniques like 21s and the preexhaust principle. If you can't see the lift, your muscles won't know what's coming and will be SHOCKED into growth!

Thank's for the advice :)

I am trying the 4x6 program I have heard my friend use from BB's......It is 3sets of somewhat heavy weight with 6reps each, and the final 4th set is 10% heavier again with 6reps...... every week he ups the weight a little bit >?

Oh I dunno, could be useful I suppose. I've been known to use LIGHT weight, and close my eyes just so I don't see the 10,000 mirrors in the gym. For me at least, form is better when I feel the weight instead of watching it in the mirror.
