I was in bed watching some TV and came across a C-Span special that featured the NY/NJ customs department.
The cheif inspector was narrating the show as custom agents/inspectors were doing their jobs inspecting containers that come through the NY/NJ seaport.
It showed them inspect containers, checking for radiation being emitted from containers, x-raying containers and physically searching the contents of the containers.
The chief also was speaking of how customs uses a computer system to "profile" ships, their cargo, and their port of origin.
They were searching boxes, 55 gallon drums, and such.
He went on to say how their job used to be primarily to search for illegal contraband, but now it has changed to not only include the drugs but also WMD and terrorist threats.
Customs is now part of the homeland security department. Their staff has been increased (especially with Operation Iraqi Freedom) and their job is "much more important" now that we are at war with a known terrorist state.
He claimed that one million + containers come through the NY/NJ seaport each year and each container is search if needed.
No wonder than seizure rates are back up and many of our international friends are having trouble getting things to the US.
Not to mention the SARS scare has them on high alert.
