Injured/Torn Hamstring?

MikeMartial

Did this the other night at tae kwon do....side kicked with my right leg, and felt a shooting pain down my left ham...been doing the RICE, had a professional massage. But, because of this, I've missed my belt testing, and I'm worried about the long term damage.

Any advice to get back on my feet, and not have a permanent, nagging injury???

Are you bruised up? If you tore it...it will be black and blue...and many colors in between. Mine is right now. It has been 5 days and I can now walk on my own...

Don't worry about the belt testing. It will come and go.

Ice 5x plus a day if there is swelling or bruises (tears). Aleve, 2 tabs a day...twice a day. Once swelling is gone...use heat to promote the circulation and healing process.

Rest is VERY important... I've been taking muscle relaxers and they have helped quite a bit. Not sure what I am going to do when I run out...

Aw man that sucks, that does sound torn. No contusion on my ham at all, so I'm assuming it's just a bad pull. Did it Monday, and I can still feel it when I walk. Attempted class Wednesday, but after a short 10 minute warmup, I just left, PO'd. I made a physio apt for next week, so hopefully I'll get a good assesment by then.

Been doing the rest, ice (not as much as i should), but I'm unsure about compression bandages, if they'd help the healing process. Also been using ibuprofen, 400mg every 4 hours or so.

My major concern lies in re-gaining flexibility and ROM (range of motion). This happens to be the #1 injury in Tae Kwon Do, and I'm not the most flexible guy in the first place. I haven't hit the weights in about 6 months or so; I'm wondering if some sort of atrophy has affected my muscle integrity.

Thanks for the reply, B, hope the healing goes quick.

I think you just strained it. Doesn't sound like a pull or a tear. Get on a bike, getting some blood flow in there will help heal. A few days later to some very light ham curls.

Well, had my physio apt the other day. For sure a pulled ham, hurts on palpation at both insertion ends. Gets better, though. Looks like I have some major hip flexor strain also, all this on my left side.

No tae kwon do for me till Jan, at the earliest. That majorly sucks, I feel like a big sack of atrophy right now.

I'm making a chiro apt; this isolated left side crap is making me think there may be some kind of bio-mechanical imbalance.

Hey B Fold, how is your hamstring coming along?

I walked seim-normally for the first time this evening...

last night...

Today is 11 days post injury.
