In a society where crime is epidemic and prisons are overflowing, state executions serve a two-fold purpose. First - execution eliminates the cost on society of keeping a convict locked up, fed, supervised, and cared for (medically, etc). Second - execution eliminates the predator. In cases such as this - where there is a wealth of evidence and/or witnesses - execution meets out the same end that one human being willingly forced upon another.
AND before anyone starts crying a river over "who are we to judge" or "how can you not value life". To you I say - welcome to the USA - you can say what you want and so can I. But we all play according to the same rules - so be careful which ones you decide to break.
