my interpretation is that it was drugs, but they gave it the gold halo both to emphasize its material value in cash AND its central importance to the illegal culture than they were a part of.

I have a different thoery. One of of the occations when it is opened, it kinda looks like there is glass on the top part and you can see a reflection of what looks like the constitution or something like that inside. A lot of my friends agree. I don't remember which time it is though when they open it.

It wasn't a soul, it wasn't drugs, and it wasn't gold. It was the Holy Grail, the cup of Christ that gives immortal life. Sam Jackson's character's "realization", the bible passages, the miracle of Jackson and Travolta not being hit by the bullets, there were lots of "religious" aspects to the movie, it only makes sense that the briefcase had some religious aspect as well.

That's my take anyway...

The diamonds from the job in reservoir dogs could have been in the brief case in Pulp Fiction. I've heard of the story of Marcelluss' soul before and i think its just as probable as the fact that it was gold dogshit in the briefcase

I don't know about all that other crap, but it looked like gold to me. Or at least something made of gold. You could see a gold reflection on Tim Roth's face in the diner when they opened it.
